Hello Everyone,
I am a new banjo player and have been learning the Ballad of Jed Clamplet but would really like to play the television theme song which is considerably different.
Does anyone have the banjo tab? I have the lyrics, just not the tab.
Thanks!

banjoman, check out the stuff available in tabs & lessons menu. Run your mouse over the menu and you'll see a side menu that appears: Tabulature Archive, Browse Lessons, and Video Lessons. If you go here banjohangout.org/tab/
you can do a search for Beverly Hillbillies. Good luck and welcome to the BHO

Ross Nickerson has a great tab book you can download and it has a simple but great sounding version of this song and several others. You get the mp3 for each as well. I think downloaded, the whole thing was about $14, and well worth it.
I am not affiliated with Ross, but I know it was the easiest version for me to learn and modify.
The site is banjoteacher.com

Hi Banjoman
Welcome to the Hangout..
Not really sure which version of the tune your looking for. However Casey Henry does the Beverly Hillbillies on her Easy Songs for the Banjo... Murphy Method - No Tab
Check out the link

"This is the Ballad of Jed Clampet not the TV Version which had the words...black gold Texas Tea...."
Banjoman18, are you saying that the tv version you are referring to had those words, or that the BoJC had those words? The words are definitely from BoJC, and the tab (along with words) is also in the Scruggs book. Possible you are not "hearing" the tune in the tab? You can have TEFview play the tab to hear how it sounds.

I remember the Scruggs book version of Ballad of Jed Clampett and as a beginner i found it to be quite a ride....I have since learned an easier version, which sounds good to me anyways....Good luck with your search, bound to be around here somewhere!!...Jim

If I'm not mistaken, the part you're talking about - the banjo line that opened the show - was almost like a kind of single-note work punctuated with occasional simple rhythm rolls and pinches that backed up Jerry Scoggins' vocals, and it didn't break out into full Scruggs-style finger rolls until the announcer said, "The Beverly Hillbillies."
youtube.com/watch?v=tkOGM6gHvao
Most intermediate banjo players can do the full roll stuff, but that technique Earl played on the first part of the theme is pretty tricky. Personally, I've never even tried to learn it because it's about the only example of that kind of banjo playing I've heard (but I'm more of a multi-instrumentalist and admittedly not strictly a banjo specialist), and it didn't seem worthwhile learning it when its use is limited pretty much to that one song.
But knowledge is power, and learning as much about banjo playing as you can will give you more power to know what you're doing with it.
Good luck!

Thanks Doc. This is the Ballad of Jed Clampet not the TV Version which had the words...black gold Texas Tea....
I have found the lyrics no problem but am having a real tough time finding the tab to match the theme song.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Ira Gitlin - Posted - 06/28/2010: 06:33:32
Even if you learn the version in the Scruggs book, it won't sound like the up-tempo portion of the theme that you hear on the TV show. That's because the version in the book was transcribed from the recording that Flatt and Scruggs made after the TV show became popular. It was a different recording session, and Scruggs played the breaks quite a bit differently.
That brings up an important issue that beginners need to recognize: the difference between a song and an arrangement. The song "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" is a pretty abstract thing--some lyrics, a bunch of chords (and even that is negotiable), and that's about it. But that skeleton of a song can be fleshed out in many different ways--by a bluegrass band, a symphony orchestra, a solo guitarist, etc. All of those would sound different, but all could legitimately be said to be playing the same song.
In a bluegrass context, one person's break will usually differ from another's, and as we've seen, one person may well play different breaks on different occasions, but the underlying song remains the same.

Hey there. During the part where he says "black gold....." and so on, you can use a alternating bass thumb inside outside roll (basic Scruggs roll TITM) until the kick off for the next verse. The roll would be TITM TITM on strings 3251 4251. This is exactly what Earl does on that part. Ok well not exactly, but pretty close.

Actually, the tab that Doc posted is exactly what you're looking for.
Listen to measures 48 through 69
"Black gold... Texas tea" is at about measure 65 in that tab. Then you can go back to measure 49 for the second verse, etc.

You Guys (Ladies) are awesome! Thanks for all the help. I have a single note version that I would like to share with everyone. I am trying to figure out how to add to the end of it to get the rest of the song. I am trying to ease my way into playing by getting some immediate "at a boy(s)" while moving forward.
Does anyone know how to share a .tef file?
Thanks,
Elliott

Well it must just be me. When I create a new tab it errors out on the upload piece. I never get a chance to upload the file.
If anyone wants a copy, just let me know your email address and I will send it.
Thanks!

I just remembered that I like to add a little lick at the end which might be part of what you are looking for or already discovered yourself.
