I saw that there was renewed interest in a test I did last year - so I recorded a couple more sample sound clips to compare the sound of a Helix and a Deering banjo.

The Deering is a Calico standard setup.

The Helix is an open back maple Hurricane long neck capo'ed to open G.

I recorded two songs on each banjo both the same distance from the mike, played at the same intensity.

Can you guess which is the Deering and which is the Helix?

Sample 1= Helix

Sample 2= Calico

I had to borrow my wife's computer for the test... I owne a Calico and a Helix, so I better get this right!

I think #1 is the Helix and #2 the Deering. That said, you can't have a realistic comparison without a full break up the neck. That's where you really hear the difference between resonator tone-ring banjos and openbacks.

I'm going with Dean & Bill on this one. The second banjo has a bit of an "edge" while the first has a more musical quality that suits my taste.

I may be tone def, and wrong - But.

1.Calico
2.Hurricane

I think the Hurricane has a very distinctive sound.

That said I think 10gauge's Cherry Blossom is sweet.
Me want. But I think I should learn to play first.
I wish we could hear what 1four5's sounds like.

Bill

Hey thanks Drivel. My banjo is a pleasure to play and is still my first love even since I won the Gold Tone Cello Banjo.

Dean is a big star now - you have to pay big money to hear him play!
Check out his cool story - banjohangout.org/topic/175754/#2231875

I actually prefer the sound of the first, even if the guess is wrong. #1 Helix, #2 Calico.

And the winner is?

rvrose - Posted - 04/23/2010:  14:53:52

Last chance to take the test!

Deering - Sample 2

rvrose - Posted - 04/23/2010:  20:32:12

And the answer is :

Helix - Sample 1
Deering - Sample 2

Don't feel bad if you missed - I had a hard time and I recorded it!

The Helix sounds sweet and clear. The Calico sounded a bit dark to me. I got in too late to guess but I listened before I read which was which and #1 was the sound I preferred.

Cool! Since I was the first to guess right...did I win the long neck Hurricane?

rvrose - Posted - 04/24/2010:  15:51:08

Dean - you won fair and square - maybe Larry could throw in a free Helix tee shirt for the winner! helixbanjos.com/parts.php?PA=Shirts

By the way where is Larry - he's been awful quiet lately??

Nice comparison. The Helix does certainly sound good, as does the Deering. I may have to add a Helix to my banjos one day, since I already have two Deerings.

Hope I didn't miss this somewhere, but what about the Intro banjos like the Jackrabbit. How does IT sound. I'm seriously considering one.

rvrose - Posted - 05/11/2010:  15:33:33

If Larry would let one of those Jackrabitts hop over my way I would gladly sound test it!

True enough.

I did have a neat experience the other day while playing my openback Ome with the Silverspun ring at a farmer's market and a fellow from Florida (maybe a BHOer?) stopped by to listen. He was just passing through but actually had his fingerpicks in his shorts pocket! I was playing clawhammer. He asked about the banjo and upon learning that he was a picker I offered him to play the Ome. So, I got to hear a full fledged FMB on the Ome. I was a little worried what he might find up the neck with my 13/16" bridge and a skin head that was being affected by moisture moving in to the usually very dry area.

It sounded great! He complimented my set-up and agreed that it noted true all the way up. This Ome is clear and crisp up the neck... I couldn't say that about my last (otherwise very nice) banjo. Not that it matters that much to me... I very rarely get up that far...
