I think it's a career record for me. Last December I bought a new MacBook Pro because my main work computer was not cutting it anymore. I was going to the States so I bought the latest greatest. Now today Apple sends me a wonderful email:

There's some brilliant marketing and customer satisfaction strategy. Send that to someone who just dropped a couple of grand 4 months ago. "Yer obsolete already you dope!" I hear what's his name from The Simpsons snidely laughing "HA HA!" in the background.

I don't mind so much that they put out all new models. I had to buy when I needed something and was going to be where I could buy it with an English operating system, But to send me this email now? Tactless.

And you also didn't mind that you paid hundreds of dollars more, just so you could say, "I don't have to worry about getting virus'."



But seriously....I was in the SAME boat when I bought a pretty decent Windows Vista laptop (it was outdated a few months after I bought it), and for that matter, when I bought a large screen TV. The only consolation we had was that we knew we were getting fairly good discounts on these items, and we hoped that they would last a few years (without conking out).

I do feel a little bit better about the Blueray player I bought where I can upload new program updates.

It's about time, too -- They went past the normal 200 day refresh cycle by at least 100 days. A small consolation for you could be that they did not lower the price?

Really, a computer is not obsolete until it doesn't do what you need (not want).

In Apple's defense, the new entry level 13 inch MacBook pro is actually cheaper than it's predecessor.

I bought a bunch of Pentium 4 machines for $50 each. Outboard hard drive. Seems OK.
I once had the real pleasure to work with some people who used the "order of magnitude" (X10) philosophy. They couldn't be convinced to change anything until the replacement really was 10X better than what they had.

I see that Dell will let you order all the parts you want and they'll put it together and get it running. I wonder if that isn't the way to go: pick and choose, leave out stuff that can't help.

I rarely buy the "next generation," but skip one or two. Although I work mostly on my two-year old iMac, I still do any real writing in Wordperfect X3 on a PC. Both "obsolete," but will do more than I need. Unless you're doing cutting-edge internet, video or audio work, you simply don't need the latest stuff any more.

To me computers are almost like an automobile. Once you get it paid for , breaks and all parts are obsolete. So you need a new one? marketing! Micki

You can never stay on the cutting edge of computers unless you have a large amount of disposable cash. The latest in computer technology is some fast paced stuff, rolling out their latest wares is all most companies can do to stay competitive with the other brands. The latest & greatest is always just around the corner…problem is that we don’t know how many steps it is to that corner…

I don’t think that the latest rollout makes you any less satisfied with the one you have, you just feel a little “slighted” since you just spent the money, Apple’s cash register is just winding down from the “cha ching” sound…and viola…here come the new models!

You’ve still got yourself one heck of a computer there Bob, one that should carry you for a number of years, pretty sweet!

My office computer is a new T400 ThinkPad with some serious upgrades. It’s pretty late model stuff…two months ago…I’d love to have that one of yours instead!

I don't know about progressive. I'm certainly not a Luddite. Too cheap to buy a new one every two years is a better description. When I do buy I like to pay a bit extra for reliability, however.

Also, I never upgrade to newer versions of my software (bug and security fixes excepted) if it still does the job I need. Fifteen year old software is okay. Sometimes newer versions are bloated with dubious "features" but not really better.
