I have a friend that plays a 5 string SS Stewart Banjo the model number is 50,317 probably made after Stewart died and his sons took over so around 1898 im guessing? Its in really good condition with all orginal parts.

I went to this website http://www.mugwumps.com/sss_date.htm to ascertain when it may have been made.

My question is....Does anybody know what kind of price he could expect to get for it if he sold it??? I think its sacriledge myself selling it but he wants to know how much he`d get for it, in GBP.

That's a serial #, not a model number. No way whatsoever to judge value without knowing exactly what kind of banjo it is. If you post some pix, we can come up with at least a good guess.

This banjo, like all others, depends on how ornate the item is, in what kind of condition -ie is it playable as is, or does it need-strings, bridge, head, neck reset or other work. IF it is an entry level "The Student" SS Stewart banjo which are pretty unremarkable -just plain janes with dot position markers and spun pot in excellent condition-no fret wear, good frets, nice pot-about $300 american dollars. If it needs work or cleaning up-considerably less. If it is one of the ornate Stewarts-with highly decorated pegheads and tree of life type patterns through out the neck needing NO work, considerably more.

Photos will help-need photos of pot condition, neck as to straightness, and description as to IF the instrument is all original or has had restoration work done.

The arm rest is new but my friend has all the original parts. There are a dints out of the neck and one of the mother of pearl inlays is missing. Apart from that doesnt seem much wrong with it, neck is straight, stays in tune plays nicely

I am just a Stewart novice. Owned a couple over the years.
But, that is a serious Stewart banjo.
Presentation grade I think it is called.
IMO you put it in a case under the bed and do some research.

With the straight neck, I'd say U.S. $2,500-$3,500. Maybe higher at retail at a well-known dealer. Insure it at $4,000.

Rogers is right about the value. I have two "Special Throroughbred" SSS banjos that are almost identical to this one; one has a 10 5/8" head and the other has an 11 5/8" head.
They are probably #3's, but not presentation models.
