I used this melody line to work out a tab a few years ago.

I don't think the Pogues do this song very well, it losses something. But with this melody line and knowing the proper timing maybe you can cobble something out. Scruggs Rolls isn't the way to play this tune...Think Celtic.

I don't disagree with you very often, but The Pogues version is my favourite of the few that I have heard, which includes Bogles. I find that they really capture the mood of the song.

Eric Bogle however, is one of the icons of folk music to me.

I started working out this arrangement (by the Pogues) with a melody line and lyrics with the simple banjo back-up as stated above...

So far, I've got the first verse and chorus....

This may take a few weeks, considering all of the verses.

Folks ask for the tune frequently and nobody has done anything with it.

Great tune....

The rythym is different for 3/4 than 6/8....the accents anyway....

What gives with the 6/8 lad?

First, the Pogues miss the melody, they gloss over the tune, it's as if they only sing half the notes. I think they ruined this soulful song about the men who fought the war...It's like doing the Lords Prayer to hip hop.

Tom, the song isn't "Waltzing Matilda" it's a song...if you were to say, about no longer being able to Waltz Matilda. It's true time is 6/8 then it goes to 3/4 for the "Waltzing Matilda" interlude. Give a good ear to the orignal and you'll hear the change.

It's like Classical Gas...Everyone who has tabbed it has always missed the timing. The tab sounds okay but it's missing something, the proper timing as with the Pogues arr. of The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.

It is a sad tune, no question...

It caused me to read the history of that battle as posted in Wikipedia, under: "Gallipoli"...

I didn't care about history as a child, but it's fascinating now.

All of the people that have given their lives to get all of us where we are now.

Hopefully a better place.

One bar of slow 6/8 can sound exactly like 2 bars or moderate waltz-time 3/4. It's all in how you express it.

I'll never play like Earl Scruggs or sing like Luciano Pavarotti, but I'll pick better than Luciano and sing tenor better than Earl

I'm back.
Just spent a few days up on my boat.
There were about 60 reads and no replies when I left. Got a phone call later to tell me about the replies, but couldn't do anything about it.
Thanks for the replies so far. I'll go through them several more times.
For what it's worth my Bushwacker Australian song book has "Waltzing Matilda" as 6/8 and "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" as 3/4.
Keep in mind thought that they are different songs.
I included the two links. Not to say one version was better than the other.
They are just different. It's the banjo on the pogues version i like best, and well who ever heard of a sober Irishman :-)
And when I say Irishmen, I mean (at least half of) us Aussies too who's families came from Ireland.

Are you sure you didn't mix the timing up for the two songs? "Waltzing Matilda" is a waltz and the "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" isn't. If you didn't, it's just one of those things where the book is wrong or it's typo.

I just played the song off the record and "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is sure enough, 6/8 and the "Waltzing Matilda" interlude, that's in 3/4.

But hey, play it the way it works for you.

I wrote what the bushwackers song book says.
I think I have a copy of the music for Waltzing Matilda from school over 40 years ago, but can't find it. It may have been closer to the original (keeping in mind that there are several versions of Waltzing Matilda). I think most people use the Queensland version.

The plot thickens. Keep in mind that the title is Aussie slang and has nothing to do with the timing.

I missed his point....but now it's clear...2 distinctly different tunes.

I believe all of us are talking about the Eric Bogle tune.

I looked up "The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda" on Wikipedia, and it said the author's name was Bogle....maybe they misspelled it...I've done worse.

As I was working out the Pogue's version in Tabledit Saturday night, I was enjoying a cold 22 oz. "Guinness Extra Stout"...

Everyone to their own taste of music but Shane McGowan the pogues frontman is one of the best song writers of his generation. A true poet. Love them or loathe them The Pogues put their own mark on Irish music and will always be remembered for it. Maybe they dont look like your perfect pop, rock, ballad band. I've purposefully been without a television since leaving the parents home in 1980...

I don't feel like I've missed much... (American Idol is a joke...I only know of it from occasional glimpses on other people's sets...X-Factor? I don't even know what it is...probably thankfully).

Back in the eighties, if I had an extra buck, I bought a guitar, sat at my then apartment and practiced my scales and chords (with a cold six-pack in the fridge) to the chagrin of my downstairs neighbors...("Does he have to practice ALL night?")....

I just watched the YouTube video in the above post....

Yes, bad language, but taken in context...it is a short and fleeting moment in a quarrel and doesn't overpower the song it is a part of...I found it mildy amusing...

Reminds me of the 3 short years I was married....

It's a thought-provoking tune and video celebtrating the season we will shortly be heading into.

Well I Am sure. She sounds like a sunday school teacher. Not like a young bloke that went to hell and back, watched his mates get slaughtered and came home a hollow shell of a man.
I think that's why I like the pogue version. And pogues remind me of family, except they don't drink and swear as much.
