Cuz -- the version on the CD you have actually is the version by Lacey Phillips mentioned earlier on this thread. There was originally an LP called Instrumental Music of the Southern Appalachians by a variety of folks including Etta Baker, Hobart Smith and others. When it was reissued on CD some tracks by Erik Darling were added, but the whole album ended up getting credited to him.

I though I would re-ignight this thread to say I just uploaded my own version of Marching Jaybird - it's my first ever tune and recording, so nothing special, but I'm so thankful for everyone in this thread who posted information about the tune! It's a shortened version, moreof a sound test until I find my recording feet, it's over on my music page if anyone wants to hear it

Wow!. I'm impressed. I could almost hear Cora playing along on guitar. Very old timey finger picking.

And now to re-re-ignite this thread (because it seemed like the best place to put this info): the great folks at Music Maker Relief Foundation (http://www.musicmaker.org/) will be releasing an all-banjo Etta Baker CD in December. Should be about half solo banjo and half banjo with fiddle.

Being completely enamoured of the Etta Baker/Cora Phillips/Elizabeth "Babe" Reid up-picking style, I'm WAY excited to soon be getting a whole CD's worth to enjoy listening to and pillage ideas from.

This sounds brilliant, Jami, but, alas, I cannot seem to find any information about this release on the website you linked to; is this because I cannot read, or have you got somebody on the inside feeding you information?

Jami108 - Posted - 11/19/2009:  08:31:05

Yeah, I had a recent email correspondence with Glenn Hinson about his amazing LP of North Carolina field recordings "Eight-Hand Sets and Holy Steps." There are a couple of tracks with Cora Phillips, Etta Baker's sister, and Elizabeth "Babe" Reid, her cousin. In his initial reply he said that Etta was skiddish about releasing recordings at that time (sounds like maybe she had gotten burned in the past). The next day he emailed me back because he had gotten an advanced copy of the forthcoming banjo CD, including some tracks that he had recorded.

I emailed the folks at Music Maker, and they confirmed that the CD is set for a December release. You can bet I'll be checking their website until it shows up!

I tried finding this tune here on the BHO but the few versions do not sound familiar as to what I know as Marching Jaybirds. Billy Mathews was working with us on this tune as a medley with Way Down In Jaybird Town this past October. Maybe he has a Missouri version. I looked for Chip's but I didn't see it. Billy plays these in G.

I'd be really interested to hear some other versions of Marching Jaybird - the only versions I have heard is the Etta Baker one plus a Lacey Phillips one.

Hi Becca,
OK I put up my practice session. It is a medley of Marching Jaybirds and Way down Yonder in Jaybird Town. I recorded this so I could practice the change between tunes. I just learned the tunes because Billy was in town and we were working towards playing a Contra Dance that week. Billy Mathews is the king of playing a bunch of tunes no-one knows then when we all seem to get close to the tune .... he starts another one. Whew... if I only had a few more years under my banjo, maybe then I can keep more tunes in my bag.

The Etta Baker banjo album (aptly titled "Etta Baker: Banjo") is now available at http://www.musicmakerstore.org/etta...r-banjo.html. Of course, I already put my order in! Hopefully Thanksgiving won't slow down the post office too much.
