I have been cooking pigs most my life. I have cooked for friends family but never cooked for a price. Anybody have any experience in this business?
Charcoal 20.oo
100 lb pig 129.00
sause 12.00
gas to get there 10.00
172.00 total
If I charge 200.00 for my service with a little banjo pickin that brings it to
400.00 does that sound about right?

Let's see:
Consider one lb/person - so it will serve at least 100 people. that makes it $4.00/person.
I think that is about right.
Where ya cooking this pig?

Before I built my cooker I use to pay 350 to 400 bucks and I would probably charge about the same unless they wanted me to pull the pork vs. just cutting it up.

Depends, who's buying the beer? You or your prospect?>![]()
Makes a big difference in your fee. I mean there is 12-14 hrs,
there, for social activities, while you watch the pig cook, and pick!![]()

I use my pig cooker for family and friends only..never charged anybody. I made a few modifications this winter and I'll be taking it for a test drive this weekend with a pork front shoulder and a couple of oven-stuffer-roaster chickens.
But it is alot of work...no doubt....I don't know what I would charge to do it for work.

Right about now, you wouldn't have to pay for the pig. Just go over to pstroud1's place. See:

I'd be willing to accept half the best offer -- for $200 cash money, I'll eat the pig.

$400.00 is a fair price. We pap $6.00 a person for an once a year we have and we have about 100 people
8thpol - Posted - 03/25/2009: 18:29:44
You will be working atleast ten hours right? thats about $20.00 an hour for your services if that seems like fair money for the time spent plus you are having fun banjo picking.....then roast away
Odds are good.......but the goods are odd
Forrest - Posted - 03/26/2009: 07:53:17
Dick,
I'd do it based on a head count. If you think a 100 Lb pig will feed 60-70 people, then I'd divide your cost by that number, adding in some for your time and trouble, depending on who it is and what you feel comfortable charging.
If that 100Lb hog feeds 60 people and you charge $6.00 a head, then you'd get $360.00 for the job. Just a thought. That doesn't include sides such as slaw or rolls, nor does in include paper goods, so you may need to factor that cost in if you're expected to provide those too. I'd round it up to $400.00, since the apple that you put in the pig's mouth and the new set of strings on your banjo (for picking while you wait) cost you something too.
$400 doesn't seem to bad to me.
