Being as to how the Banjo is just a "happy go lucky, fun in the sun, front porch on a warm day, roll out those lazy hazy crazy days of summer" kinda instrument, I do hereby nominate June 21 as International Banjo Appreciation, Recognition Day. June 21, the Summer solstice, is the official 1st day of summer. What better way to start the summer than by playing the Banjo?

I'd file this under "Things I dream of, but no way..."
I've got my own version... I drive to church and to the front of the parking lot, and there in a nicely sized parking space is a sign that emphatically says:
Church Banjoist.

If there is no great objection, I am going to issue a proclamation sometime this week, naming the Third Saturday of June as International Banjo Appreciation and Recognition Day. (IBARD) I first have to make sure the name is not already in use. This is the last chance to vote for a different day, or find a proclamator with more sense than me to do the job right. Otherwise, we're stuck with my errors, and omissions. I'm OK with my shortcomings, if Y'all are.

I won't say any more about E. Hall, without his permission, as I hope to keep him as a friend. Some day he may slow down his table tennis matches long enough to learn to play his mandolin, and we can pick a few together.
Better late than never. Does anyone know if we have a Governor,Mayor, council member, etc on the Hangout who can help lend this endevor some legitimacy?

Still looking for a politico to help us move this project along. A Governor, Senator or Member of Congress would be great. Barring that, a mayor, council person or etc is good to get started. Just want an endorsement from a city or tomn. How about it, Y'all? Got any politico's that owe you a favor, or who play banjo? I wrote an email to the Mayor of Galax, Virginia, as it seemed an appropriate place to begin. Still waiting for a reply. Or for the FBI to come calling.

In other news, I'm still hoping for a Designated Official of some Organized Political Subdivision to step up and recognize our Day. I'm hoping for a Governor, or one of the non US equivalents. But A Mayor, Member of Council or Alderman will do. Chief of Police, Township Trustee, etc.Any body got contacts?

I have contacted my Senator, his reply was he was intrigued with the idea, thought it did have merit. He also stated he would keep an eye out for any legislation for it ( these things start in the House, not the Senate) and would support it if it did come up. I am currently attempting to contact my Congressman to see if he will sponsor it from the House. I believe we should all do everything we can to convince our Congressmen/women and our Senators on this matter. The more we contact them, the better the chance they will talk amongst themselves and realize there may be alot more support. After all, it is merely a declaration making a day special, no cost involved.

P.S. Here is the actual reply he sent to me:
Dear Mr. McKinzie:
Thank you for sharing with me your suggestion to create a commemorative Banjo Appreciation Day. I appreciate having the benefit of your thoughts about the significance of this remarkable instrument.
Should such legislation come before the full Senate for consideration, and as the Senate considers additional ways to honor our nation's musical heritage, I will have your thoughts closely in mind.
Thank you, again, for taking the time to write to me.
Sincerely,
Richard G. Lugar

I have just finished sending email letters to 2 congressmen and 1 more Senator, as well as one to my Governor. I will keep you all posted as to their replies. Until then, here is the leter/email I sent:
Dear _____,
I am a budding musician, having started to teach myself the Banjo now that I am able to take more time to enjoy life. As such, it has come to my attention, and many of my fellow Banjo players as well, there is no official recognition of this truly uniqe and American instrument.
If you could take a few minutes to look at a discussion on this subject at:
http://www.banjohangout.org/forum/t...IC_ID=128303
You will see there is support for designating the 3rd Saturday of June as Banjo Appreciation and Recognition Day. This may at first seem trivial, however, upon reflexion there is no instrument which truly speaks as American. The Banjo has been highly influential in the creation of Dixieland, Jazz, Bluegrass, Old Time Folk, Country and Western,as well as playing a huge roll in Celtic/Irish music.
This Instrument itself is known worldwide deserving the banjo a place in the international showcase and we have the added importance of the five string banjo invented in the United States giving us a national recognition day as well. Let me add, there is also a strong history of Banjo manufacturing in Indiana's past.
The simple act of designating the 3rd Saturday of June as (International) Banjo Appreciation and Recognition Day would cost the people of the United States nothing monitarily, and would give much in return.
I thank you for your time, please feel free to contact me if you need more information.
Yours truly,
John McKinzie
Please, feel free to use this in part or in it's entirety (as I have borrowed some from here myself) to contact your own Congressmen/women, Senators. Make sure to include your email as well as regular address. give your phone # too, you will not get a reply if you don't supply real info.

Here's the answer from one of our Ohio Senators:
"Dear Mr. Certo:
Thank you for sharing your idea for an International Banjo Appreciation and Recognition Day.
The banjo has a rich history in our country. Originally developed by African slaves in the United States, the banjo is a uniquely American instrument that is recognized throughout the world.
I appreciate your advocacy on this issue. Unfortunately, my current legislative schedule will not allow me nor my staff the time to devote to a federal proclamation. While I am unable to assist in this project, I wish you the best of luck in this endeavor.
Thank you again for getting in touch with me.
Sincerely,

I do not wish to embarass my Senator, as he obviously has more pressing matters than a Banjo Day on his hands. I certainly don't persue this matter at work, My Boss would have a hissy fit! For thatreason, I have omitted his/her name. However, that leaves Me as the current Highest Ranking Public Official to step up and Proclaim a New Holiday in Honor of our Beloved Banjos. (Y'all ain't elected/appointed officials, are you?) Sorry, folks, a bus mechanic is the best I have been able deliver as a champion for our cause. As far as I'm concerned, my proclamation still stands, albeit perched on a house of cards, rather thana house of Congress. At least The Wolf ain't at the door!We still have a few things to try. Formost is to organize small jams at each of our localities in Honor of the Day. 2 or3 people playing music somewhere, private, or hopefully, public with an apropriate notice in the local paper, even if after the fact.Send info to me through the BHO and I'll post it in the Official Blog. You can release only the city if you like to keep it all private.

We had a bouncy house, and frosted cupcakes, and her mom & dad are SUPERB cooks.
