Hi all,
in response to some recent threads on Australian banjo makers, i'd like to draw you attention to some pictures on my home page of my Doole banjo, made by Ray Black of Victoria.
after sampling these banjos over the course of a couple of years at festivals and those owned by other players, i decided this was the one to go for. The banjo arrived last week - and what a piece of work.
This baby has a 12" inch rim, tubaphone style tone ring,frailing scoop. all ?. native timbers and metalware custom made, apart from the tuners.
came with a nice custom case as well. australians, get onto this bloke before his waiting time jumps up.
i'll do a better review in the appropriate section.

Always keen to hear of more Australian made banjo's. I was looking at Eucalypt Banjos Open-Backs, have you played them? If so how do they compare?

I'll chime in again about my Australian made banjo - a Buckmaster (Tubaphone style open-back) - that I have had for over a year - and which I like better and better, every day, as I keep playing it.
I did a review for it a couple of weeks ago. (I will be using it for my next recordings - but I am not sure when I will record.)

thanks for the congrats. In answer to your questions -
price - varies according to options, inlay and such. lets say that it was less than double the cost of Goodtime banjo over here.
I haven't played a eucalypt openback, so can't compare. I did play a resonator model once and it sounded great, but a different kettle of fish to this one.
Not sure who makes the cases, but am pretty sure is someone relatively local over here.
I'm pretty sure the neck and rim are blackwod, with a type of ebony fretboard.
The head is an elite amber / translucent, which is a departure from their usual fiberskyn. The custom options i chose were the head, armrest, and my initials inlaid at the 12th fret.
I debuted the banjo at the local folk club the other night and it held up really well. It's a it quiet over the neck, but makes for some nice dynamics.
by the way, the photos really don't do it justice !
