Here's a short clip. I got about 198-200 bpm tapping it out on my metronome, but he's playing triplets in some of his phrasing, so the notes per minute is up there.

I hope I don't get slapped up side of the head for asking this, but it is a fair question. Does Todd Taylor write his own profiles? In other words is he the one who wrote that he is the greatest banjo player of the century, or did someone disinterested party write that information? This isn't the blatant blast it looks like, because many people write their own resumes so to speak concerning their musical skills. Personally, I always felt from reading stuff Todd posted on the HO over time, that he wrote most of his own praise, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that just that was the impression I got from reading the praise he posted about himself. I'm just curious. Not trying to heat up a dead horse, since everyone but Johnny stands to gain zero from this discussion.

Sorry! I stand corrected!
Actually, I thought your metronome sounded much nicer than the outfit Todd used. I only listened to his recording once, and it sure sounded over-busy to me. I thought your playing was much more relaxed... it was obvious to me that Todd struggled.
I dunno- he said he was very sick when he did his attempt. I'm never going to try, but if I did, I would rather call it off and re-schedule if possible than try while running a fever.

It appears that Todd and Johnny are not at it, but their respective detractors. IMHO I bow to each of their picking skills.

We are a bluegrass family and each of us has our own view on things hence Sammy set up her own account (Earls new kitten)in order to be part of 'this community' Kindly reinstate her account and may I suggest you make enquiries before you act next time.

As for the person who makes up these rules? The Gentlemen who owns BHO.

I'm curious why this topic was locked the last time through....It is obviously a hot topic....did things get out of hand?
And on the subject of speed....I agree that there is no substitute for clarity, tone, etc. and that speed is not the issue....And I agree that noone here including me would pay for a CD or any works at those speeds....it wouldn't be fun to listen to....but that is not the setting we are talking about......this is a COMPETITION simply based on speed....The rules and guidelines through Guiness need to be cleared up and made better, but it is still fun to listen to just once to actually hear who plays fastest!!
I have no problem with the competition...they aren't asking me to buy copies of it!!!
And FWIW, anyone that plays can listen to the two files and determine pretty quickly what needs to be determined...actually, you don't even have to be able to play to hear which is faster and actually sounds better....
I look forward to further rounds...

Well done Ray...I always admired John Hartford. I remember reading an article where he said, when he started out he copied everything Earl did, right down to the haircut! But then one day it suddenly ocurred to him that in copying Earl, if Earl were to ever 'go out of fashion' then John would be 'out of fashion too, so he set about developing his own style based on how he truly felt the music should be.
Good philosophy, but 'Earl go out of fashion'? I think John would laugh at that remark too if he were still with us
I used to love hearing hm play that low pitched banjo too.....

Hugh, I'm a little confused here.
It was Johnny's WIFE that had the account, not him...apparently he wasn't even aware of it....Regardless, I dont see whether he was aware of it mattering.
Suppose one of the "people under the stairs" at my house got loose and got on the computer while I was away at work and created a banjohangout account...Should I have to notify banjohangout about this (even if i know nothing about it?)...How does this work? We have to notify you guys if our OTHER family members are gonna create an account?
The rules say a person can't have multiple accounts...does it say something about whether a persons family can participate?...If a mans 12 year old son comes on here, uses the same computer and creates account does he risk getting daddy's account locked???
I guess i don't see how this is all Johnny's fault.......and perhaps two people using the same computer with different accounts throws a banjowrench into the rules?

Jody, I have no idea why you're confused because if anyone knows about having multiple accounts it would be you.
When you joined BHO you were directed to read the rules...It says "Multiple accounts are not allowed." If you want to add another account let a Moderator know...You know this because of the multiple accounts you have had AND you have let us Mods know when you opened a new account.
AND...Johnny didn't lose his account...The rule reads, "Users trying to pull this trick risk having their membership in these forums revoked.
Only the 2nd account was locked.
