yeah afew of them songs and more have aredy been featured in the picken on seris so it has been done and there are a few folk metal bands that use banjos off and on every now and then

Bawn in the Mash is an up and coming band in western Kentucky--and one that gets a lot of flak from traditionalists--mixes in rock, and even an occassional touch of rap, with their "new grass" approach.

One of the songs on their most recent CD is called "Little Pieces of Paper" and begins as a failry traditional sounding bluegrass tune and then morphs over into a Jimi Hendrix chorus, with the mandolin playing the Hendrix riff. They also do some really tasteful Pink Floyd covers on bluegrass instruments.

One more tidbit: I hear through the grapevine that Bawn in the Mash might be looking for a banjo player. If you go to the myspace page listed above you'll hear a few of their songs and can get a feel for where they are heading. It might be worth while to contact them if it feels like the vehicle for you.

America had a song called "Don't Cross the River" back around '72 that had a banjo roll in the background. That started my curiosity with the instrument.

I've seen Hayseed Dixie mentioned in responses to similiar questions and, just my opinion, they don't really fit. They take rock and rap songs and "convert" them to bluegrass. Don't get me wrong I like them, but they're a bluegrass band covering rock songs, not a rock band with a banjo.

Banjo has been used in rock and blues and can be a diiferant sounding backup for a certain sound to be achieved.

Strummin' with the Devil is a really really good album with live cuts of many super good banjo players and bands doing Van Halen tunes.

Check out the 'Pickin On...' cd collection. they have Pickin on the Dead, and Pickin on Neil (young) and i think a few others. Red on Blonde is a great cd by Tim O'brien that covers Bob Dylan songs.

also, i have heard Eight Days a Week and Sweet Child of Mine done in a bluegrass manner. i am sure they are on the internet somewhere, but don't remember where.

David----Bawn In The Mash was supposed to be in Harlan a few weeks ago but had to cancel due to that freakish snow storm. I was really looking forward to seeing them.

Back on topic, my "other band" does some Fleetwood Mac covers, and I find it easy to substitute banjo breaks for Lyndsey Buckingham's guitar on some songs since a lot of his guitar work is based on a fingerpicked style anyway.
