someone talks me out of it. Ok, I've saved the $800. I've read the reviews. There are several banjos in this price range to look at. In the end my thinking is this - if they all are relatively equal, plain truth is, I really love the look of the Matterhorn.

The tone is described as "Warm and Mellow"- so if you want it to sound like Earl's, it probably won't. Have you played one? They're cool looking for sure.

I know what it is like to have your heart set on a particular instrument. However, I would strongly suggest if at all possible, you actually play one before parting out with all that money. Instruments that look real nice don't always have a sound to match. The appeal of the eyes is strong but you want to have a sound that is equal to it as well. Please slow down and consider these things. You really want an instrument you don't have to swap parts out of to make it sound good.

My advice is to always play everything you can get your hands on in your price range. That being said my experience with MM banjos has been great so I doubt you would be disappointed.

Hi, Blues...
Wayne's advice is very sound. If you can't play a Matterhorn locally, and decide to order one, be sure that you have at least a 48 approval period to allow you some time to play the banjo before your check is deposited.

If, for whatever reason, you don't like it, you will probably have to pay the return shipping, but that's much less than being stuck with a banjo you don't like. If you love it, you can call them before the 48 hours is up and tell them to deposit the check. Some dealers allow more time, but all good ones give this 48 hr. approval.

If you're dealing with one who doesn't, look for another dealer who will. You might end up paying a little more for the banjo, but the approval time is worth it. Most dealers will match another's price on this brand, too, so there is usually a little dickering room if the dealers know you are ready to buy.

Talk a lot with your dealer. Make sure everything is very clear to you before you commit money.
