Evidently those baldwins had the note seperation those guys of that ability needed , I personally know Jesse Mcreynolds lamented Garland going to a gibson.

I am sure glad to see this post still going on strong. Please Fiddlechik, drag Larry to your computer and show him this post and get him to join so we can pick his brain a little. Maybe once he see's that he still has a strong following he will come out of hidding. Come on do it! Please please please. Robert.

Amen, Robert (RB5)! I talked to him in Pigeon Forge several years ago after his group did their show.........(I had him to myself for about 2 hours - talk about a dream come true!).........and I suggested that he consider a Larry McNeely Style Banjo Course with DVD. He said he couldn't see why anyone would want something like that from him. What a humble man. He has no idea how big his following is and how well thought of he and his music are. I had followed his music for 31 years before I first met him and found him to be one really great guy and very humble about his playing.

Amen for me too. I remember as a kid seeing Larry McNeely on The Glen Campbell Show long before I ever started picking banjo. I had no idea who he was and it would be years before I knew his name. I credit him as one of the main reasons I even started picking banjo, right up there with Earl. Those banjo sounds bounced around in me for years and the bug finally bit hard.

Well it looks like maybe Fiddlechik might be able to talk Larry into posting here on the hangout for the first time. This would be a dream come true for me. I would have so many questions to ask him. I have his original video and tablature book which apparently he no longer has and I would like to see if he would be interested in re-printing it . I am sure that many hangout members would love these video lessons from Larry. Lets see if we can talk him into a re-print and I will gladdly send along the original materials to him.

This would be great!! Larry really needs to know about his following and all the banjo players he has influenced. When I was a teacher in Charlotte, NC from 1975 to 1990 it was a "requirement" for my students to listen to his albums. If they wouldn't buy them on their own I would loan them mine. During that 15 period I had over 1000 students and all of them were influenced by Larry. My first teacher in 1973 was Garland Shuping and he even talked about Larry's playing.......and look at the melodics Garland brought forth.

I think I will give Fiddlechik a shout and reinforce RB5's idea. It's a super idea and he started this thread in March of 2008. We've just started our 3rd year of wondering where Larry is!

lAST WEEK I heard he was still living in the Asheboro, NC area but I've not run into him.
I spoke with someone who did pick with him.

I believe that old Baldwin banjo that belonged to Larry must be pretty popular. My friend from Va . Daryl Mccumbers owned it for a while and being a trader /seller , told me it had been passed along to its new owner in Ga ... so I guess its still there !!!

Lynn - it's still there! The owner, I think, told me he uses it for recording. It is still a great sounding banjo!

Oh come on! just a few words from Larry would do it. Lynn please try and drag Larry to your computer and type in a few words of his wisdom. We are all waiting to hear from him! It would be nice if he became a member and then we could bug him all the time. Lol.

For those who didn't hear, Larry played a few weeks back at the louie bluie festival! Didn't make it but I heard it was spot on! Wouldn't doubt there being more to come!
