My wife got some tickets to a Kruger Brothers concert at The Cook Shack in Union Grove, NC about a month ago and then quite by accident we met one of the owners of the venue at a jam in Galax, VA less than a week later. While I was having fun in the jam she told my wife all about their Saturday AM jams; that's all it took to plant the bug for my wife. We endured the round of parties and get togethers over the holidays so this weekend we decieded to try the Cook Shack jam. It runs from 8 AM to 2PM (ish) every Saturday according to some folks I talked to. It was a really good time.
The Cook Shack is also a small resturant so alll the booths were full of breakfasters, many of whom strolled over to the chairs after breakfast after their meal. The jam itself had what were obviously a core of three (they were around a small table with mikes, amp and sound system controls) players and singers. Two other sort of concentric circles grew and shrank around them as players joined and left. The music was multi genre and would often jump from key to key to accomodate a singer's voice. They were open to letting anyone have a go at a tune and enlisted a cook or two to come over and sing at different times.
It's about 70 miles for us to get there so I don't think we'll make it every weekend but it is definately a well run and enjoyable jam.... we will go back for more!
