It could be the Gibson GBB tone ring(Gibson Bell-Bronze?) cast somewhere in Kalamazoo? Some of the earlier rings could have been Faulkner rings and later ones the PM "mystery ring." Do you have pictures? Any stampings near the co-rod hole?

Yes, a Gibson RB-800 banjo from the 1980's would likely have a "GBB" tone ring.
These rings have several distinguishing characteristics. They are generally very heavy, usually around 3 pounds, 14 ounces. They have a "shiny face" with 20 holes. The holes are generally drilled low on the face with a distance of only 7/32" from the bottom edge of the hole to the bottom of the face. Most of them have a gutter which has been buffed smooth and are hand-engraved "GBB" somewhere on the inside of the skirt.

Hadn't got around to taking the banjo completely apart yet but the holes in the tone ring seem to be drilled in the "standard" position.
