They are running Gun Smoke on TV land and I would have sworn one of the actors was Burt Reynolds.
Anybody know if this is correct.
N.E.banjo - Posted - 11/28/2008: 11:43:21
According to his appearance list on IMDB and "notable guest stars" for Gunsmoke on Wikipedia . . . . . no.

It sure look like a much younger version of him.
But I could be wrong
The Specialist - Posted - 11/28/2008: 12:00:20
Wilka pedia is wrong, I"ve got the DVD of it. The name of his character escapes me, it was planned to be several episodes but ended up only being a couple. That was Burt you saw on there. ;-)

I sure thought that was him. He was in some kind of a shop pounding on something metal.
bigfeller - Posted - 11/28/2008: 12:02:47
Yes, he was a cast member on Gunsmoke for 1 season in the early 1960s, 62 to 63 I think. He played Quint Asper the blacksmith. You won't see those episodes on TV Land though, for some reason they don't show the early black and white episodes of Gunsmoke, they are the best ones I believe. I have some Gunsmoke DVDs, I'll look to see exactly what year(s) Burt Reynolds was on, but I am fairly certain it was only one season.
Sam 2 - Posted - 11/28/2008: 12:05:37
Its possible we were watching one of my dad's DVD's, he watches that show all the time, but I was almost sure it was TV Land.
The Specialist - Posted - 11/28/2008: 12:14:25
My son "loves" Gun Smoke/John Wayne, (gotta like a kid like that.) They offered the timelife series of all of the old black/whites up through about 63 etc. So I signed up & bought them for him. I don't think they've got a fold out that tells. Big Feller is right, his name was Quint, I couldn't remember the rest as he did. WTG Big. I grew up watching Matt etc. always loved that show. It was pricey but...well worth it for not only my son but myself.

I agree, the early black and white episodes were far superior, with Dennis Weaver as Chester Goode, who was a much more understated sidekick than the clownish Festus Haggen, played by Ken Curtis. I remember that Burt Reynolds blacksmith character was part native American, which allowed them to deal with issues of racial and ethnic prejudice.
Speaking of guest stars, one episode had a guest appearance form Leonard Nimoy, who played an inscrutable native American character who outwitted his badguy adversaries though sheer guile. Made some years before Star Trek, the character was basically Mr. Spock without ears. One of the bad guys in that episode played a five string banjo, and I remember that the banjo they used as a prop appeared to be a 19th century spun rim instrumen

Anyway, here's him & the Cross-Dressing Cowboy, Marcia Dillon.

However, as I am old, my memory may be playing Trixie on me.
The big feather in his hatband reminds me that his character was supposed to be part Indian (which is what they were called back then.)
As for Spock portraying an Indian: With the wig on, how do we KNOW he doesn't REALLY have pointy ears? It would be highly illogical to assume that, just because we can't see them, they do not exist.
Let us not forget that Arness, himself, was ALSO from Outer Space.
Perhaps he helped Spock get the role, as a favor to a guy from the old neighborhood!

I suspect that the videotapes from the early black and white episodes have deteriorated too much to be viable for commercial airplay.

They used to show some of the black and white episodes on the Westerns movie channel up until a couple years ago, but they didn't show episodes from the first few years, back when it was just a 30 minute show. You could be right, those tapes are 50+ years old now, but they are making DVDs of the early ones though, so they can't be too bad. Who knows, maybe some of the tapes were lost.
farley - Posted - 11/28/2008: 16:01:24
Maybe they erased them, and taped the old Flatt & Scruggs Martha White shows on them. ![]()

I've seen Reynolds in Sci-Fi program -- Twilight Zone or Outer Limits -- repeats and thought I spotted him in a "Route 66" or possibly "The Fugitive".
Sometimes I just watch the beautiful Black and White photography of that era. And I like the cars too. Gunsmoke was never something I cared about - the cars were lousy. Some "Untouchables" episodes are so beautifully filmed you would swear you were watching a major motion picture.

Here's SOMEBODY as the bartender.

I thought Glenn Strange was a LOT taller.
Or were Abbott & Costello really short?
Oh, wait. I forgot how the Frankenstein's Monster had those asphalt-speader shoes.
