Started Playing Banjo in 1988, was influnced in picking up the banjo after listening to the then great Johnny Keenan at O' Donohue's pub in Dublin Ireland where I lived and spent time with him from 1982 to 1986. I got serious about playing , when I got in contact with Ian Perry for some lessons in 1989-90. He had a big influence on my progress from absolute beginner. He left me with the TAB for Dear Old Dixie on my final lesson and told me to work it out!!. This meant it was now all up to me and this was the best piece of advise I've ever had. Other influence's are Bill Knopf and his excellent book 5 string Melodic Bluegrass banjo method, in this book he teaches you not only melodic style, but scale patterns and good music theory through the fingerboard, also excellent exercises for practice. Tony Trischka's Melodic Banjo is another great influence, along with his playing, and of course Bela Fleck's great imagination. I had the pleasure and experience seeing him play in Vancouver with the Flecktones in the 90's, it was inspirational. RIP Johnny, O'D's is not the same without you.
