Greetings, it's great that this group exists. About two years ago, I bought a tenor banjo uke, a Gold Tone model BUT. Being a guitar player, (fiddle too), I kept the tenor tuning since it was easy to play the same chords on the four strings.

I'm now looking to maybe sell this. I've seen so many cool banjo ukes, especially with open backs. I took the back off of the BUT, but it looks so ugly with the empty holes, so I put it back. Another problem is that the bridge has to be reset after being in the case. Any suggestions as to how to mark where the bridge goes?

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm just an amateur who has fun with the uke. Here's a video that some woman took at a picnic this summer, to give you an idea. I also have a bad habit of not using a strap, so maybe that's affecting the sound. The fiddle is my main instrument and I'm learning claw hammer banjo, too.

	cb56 says: 8/28/2012 6:40:41 AM Well it sound good on the video. I have the BUC because I prefer the higher "ukulele" tuning. I also play some clawhammer open back 5 string banjo. I do think my banjo uke sounds better with the back on. The bridge you can mark on the head with a pencil when you get it set up properly. I haven't had to reset mine much unless I bump it while playing. I usually just measure the distance from the 12th fret and it's pretty accurate. I use a mandolin strap on mine but it keeps breaking so I think I'm going to hunt for something better.

I'd been pretty much a strummer on my little 1928 Camp Uke since getting my first ukulele in 1999, but since picking up one thumb and two finger picks and figuring out a couple of rolls, I have to say, I really like the sounds they produce on it; maybe more than how they sound on the banjo. What you could try with the banjolele you've got is tie off some leather lacings through those open holes when you've removed the back. Might give it a little more 'country' feel to it. Just don't make them so long that they get in the way of your playing, though. I've been playing with the idea of making 'cross bones' to attach on the four holes of my tenor banjo and inking in a smiley skull face on the head, or a few dials and tubes connecting around them and joining in on a couple of my friends' Steampunk gatherings. Would be really cool to have an aerosol can set up to blow a steam whistle ever now and then, too. Doubt I'll ever take it that far, though. :)

As far as the bridge, the case causes the bridge to move slightly so I think the pencil mark will be the best solution. It's just a nuisance to re-adjust it every time I take it out. Hmmm . . . leather laces woven through the open holes is a great idea. I'm still contemplating selling this, I've seen beautiful open back banjo ukes that would better suit me.
