Cool. What tuning do you plan on using?

I am leaning toward the high D reentrant tuning (dGBE). I have a regular tenor uke in this tuning and enjoying it. Especially since I have come from guitar and already using a baritone uke (DGBE) so that I can use same chord formations. Once nice thing about tenors is that you can do either the standard uke tuning or the dGBE (probably the DGBE if you can find the strings) .

Did you get the Goldtone? Any impressions to share?

I got it about a week and a half ago and I love its volume and low tones. It came with standard tuning and I changed it to high D reentrant tuning since I was very familiar with DGBE chords and played that for a few days but found that I was missing the low melody notes so I put in the 4th wound nylon string of a classical guitar string set for the 4th string and been playing that for a few days. Enjoying it but to have this tuning, the strings apear to be a bit thicker than standard strings so I am going to decide after a while whether to stay with these strings/tuning or to go to back to standard tuning (either high D or low G) and see if those strings feel better when doing melody notes - strings not as thick feeling. But part of the fun is the experimentation and no rush. It does not have a armrest and I am going to have to find some sort of sleeve to slide on my forearm to keep the hooks from pressing into my arm when I play. Goldtone sells a armrest for a 8" head but they said that the spacing of the banjo uke won't fit the armrest and there would have to be modifications to make it fit, so I am not getting the armrest - going for the sleeve or something else I can think of. That is pretty much it for a week or two of having it. I would get another one if this was lost, etc, it is fun to play.

I tune all mine in ADF#B - a full step up from standard uke tuning. I find that gives the right amount of brightness. It's also the tuning that much of the old sheet music is in, so it works out pretty well. I use aquila nylguts or Worth clear mediums on my banjo ukes, find they work very well. The worth strings are fluorocarbons and quite thin, but give an excellent tone and punch, especially tuned up a full step.

I took all my armrests off and tossed them into my bits box. A long sleeve shirt seems to fit the bill!

After a while, the strings still felt thick and I did not care for the sound so I decided to put on traditional uke tuning strings and it plays a lot easier for me. I found the ezfolk.com/uke/chords website and it is helping me learn the uke chords. Went to a local sports store and picked up a package of cheap cotton wrist bands (two for 99 cents) that is stretchy enough to feel comfortable on my forearm. (Summer here, so not wearing long sleeves). A dobro player I know here cuts off socks to wear on his arm while playing dobro, so that is a good cheap option too.
