I used an archival ink pen to decorate the head on my old Orpheum (ca. 1910). I wasn't worried about wrecking the head, as it's a synthetic replacement for the skin head that split long ago.
The design is a take-off on the vine pattern inlays found on many old (and new) guitars and banjos. I did a rough sketch in pencil before filling in with ink.
I did a similar vine pattern on my resonator banjo, but I coloured in bits (like the flowers and leaves), but I think the black-and-white looks better.
