Possibly English maker Crosby. Take a look at the example shown on Glens British banjos site.

What does the writing on the dowel stick say? I can't make it out

One word is guaranteed, the maker's stamp I can't read

Steve, I should of read your post first. I think you nailed with "Crosby" as the maker! I am missing the badge on the dowel stick but everything else matches. Thank you so much. Paul

Thank you. I think you can just make out his stamp of the dowel.

I don't think the holes are from a missing badge Paul. The few examples I have seen just have a fancy plate in the center of the dowel. There is very little information regarding Joseph Crosby. Examples rarely turn up so I doubt he was a prolific maker. Do you have the rest of the banjo ?

Glen kindly sent me a photo of one of his Crosby banjos.
