Here's a Bacon & Day plectrum banjo (scale length 26"), serial no. 17697. Good shape, clear head, seems to be all there except that one of the 4 bolts holding on the resonator is missing and another is broken.

What I want to know: Is this a No. 1, No. 2, something else? How does one tell?

Generally a #2 will have silver plating, a #1, nickel.

A#2 generally also has a carved heel. So it looks like a #1 to me.

The peghead inlay on yours is identical to my #1. The back side of my peghead, unlike yours, has an MOP inlay. Mine has #1 stamped on the side of the dowel stick. My serial # is 15xxx. I can send you photos if you'd like.
