Back in 1973, when I was still in high school, I read The Incomplete Folksinger, Pete Seeger’s collection of Sing Out magazine columns. I enjoyed it so much that I sent him a fan letter. I also asked how he managed to keep multiple instruments straight in his head; I was already playing guitar, but was considering banjo (I now have over 40).
He was kind enough to reply.

Yes, he answered his mail. About 25 years after a time I heard him live, a couple of the songs he performed kept coming to mind. I wrote asking if they were printed up somewhere, and he sent a postcard with the information. (By the way, they're great songs.)

The trio I was in wrote him a letter, and got a postcard in reply.
I wonder if Sandy still has it.
I'll fire off an e-mail, ask her.

How cool to get a letter or postcard! I have his autograph on a banjo head.

I was fortunate enough to get a postcard from him, too. It is one of my little treasures.
The only time I had the chance to meet him I passed, as I had my then-young daughter with me and it was getting late in the day. One of my regrets.
I recently read a borrowed copy of "The Incompleat Folksinger" and enjoyed it. He was certainly a man of enthusiasms. His article on playing the baroque recorder rekindled an interest I had in the instrument many years ago. So I bought a plastic Yamaha alto. Now I play an hour most days. And I now have two Yamaha and one Zen-on plastic altos, a couple better-quality plastic soprano instruments, one pre-owned good-quality wood soprano, and a little fund going for a nice wooden alto. RAS.

I, too, received a post card from Pete. It was in reply to a question I asked about a song he recorded. He provided all the information I needed on that card.
