I was at the library with the kids last week and while browsing the kids "young readers" section, a book cover jumped out at me. A novel called ""Banjo of Destiny"" by someone named Cary Fagan. I immediately scooped it up, you know, for the kids.
Well, I ended up reading it to them at bedtime over a few nights and it was great. Not only was it a decent story about finding your purpose and following through. The author is clearly a banjo (clawhammer) player and it shows through the examples of playing and building techniques Jeremiah uses. Not only that, it was the first time my daughters actually asked me questions about clawhammer vs. three-finger and the different parts of the banjo. Usually their eyes gloss over at the mere action of my picking up the banjo.
The author even gives a shout-out to Chris Coole in the author's notes as his inspiration. To be honest, even though it's a children's book, I would recommend it as a quick and easy adult read.

Hey, Benson, thanks for mentioning my book. It was a lot of fun to write and there's nothing better than getting a compliment from a banjo player! I'm still more of a mandolin player (I have an adult novel, 'Valentine's Fall,' about a bluegrass player) but I do love clawhammer. Your kids might like some of my other kid novels; they're all in the library system. By the way, I recently built a mountain banjo. Cheers.

I will definitely check out your adult book now. Jeremiah re-kindled the fire in me to build a banjo. I've printed out the plans for the hand-drum based banjo that was posted here a few years ago. I'm determined to have one done by springtime :)
