And there were plenty of very, very low volume craftsmen making banjos, usually only on order, back in those days. My banjo was built for me in 1973 by John Janzegers. He mostly made and sold 3-ply rims, tone rings and resonators. But he also sold complete pots, generally using Stew-Mac parts for what he didn't make. And he made some complete banjos, though he never put his name on the peghead as far as I know.

I would add Recording King Custom USA banjos to the discussion. I have one and absolutely love it. Greg Rich and his team do a great job. The fit and finish won't be beat. I have several banjos and none of the others are as well made as the RK.
However, the original question was about the top 5 builders, so....here are my top 5.
