A couple of months ago I needed  some coordinator rods for a couple of banjos that I was working on . Most everything I could find was pretty blaaaa looking , no real character . So I jumped in and decided to create my own , and of course made up some extras to sell . So here they are .

Made right here in America by me in my machine shop . I’ve a CNC mill CNC Lathe , engine lathe , manual mill , Sunnen hone ect .  Been at it for 13 years and make a large variety of parts …

They are made from solid brass rod and are right at .700 at their largest diameters . They adjust in length with a 5/16-24 thread that’s hidden in the center area . They will adjust from 9.300 to 10.300 in length . I’m able to supply them with pretty much any American thread up to 3/8” or any metric thread up to 10mm at either end of the rod . So we should be able to accommodate most any neck or tailpiece that you will be using .

They weigh right at 14 oz each and then you would subtract 2-3 oz  for the weight of your standard rods & hardware that you will remove or not use , and you will be adding aprox 12 to 13 oz to your banjo for each rod used .

To install them you ‘collapse’ them to their shortest  length , place them into your rim , thread them onto your neck mounting studs and tighten up the neck . Then ‘expand’ them until you just touch the opposite (tailpiece) side of the rim . Now put the set screw (provided) thru the hole in your rim and thread it into the co-rod . Snug up the rod to your desired (inside) tension and put on your tail piece mount  as needed .

Installing the 2^nd rod in a 2 rod banjo you use the basic procedure above but the upper rod will have either a set screw or an allen screw cut to the correct diameter to match your blind hole .(see picture #8) that ‘nubb’ will engage in the hole and you snug up the tension with the center thread much like you snug up the tension on a normal co-rod with the nut.

I will need the following information from you in order to supply parts that fit … 1) the inside diameter of your rim …2) the thread size of your neck attachment studs … 3) the thread size of your tail piece ball or ‘L’ bracket nut …

Single rod with screw for tail piece ball or ‘L’ bracket nut  $55.00  . This does not include the ball or ‘L’ bracket …

Double rod set with screw for tail piece ball or ‘L’ bracket nut and screw that engages into the ‘blind’ hole $99.00   . This does not include the ball or ‘L’ bracket …

On this batch of parts I will pay the shipping in the U.S.A. or ship to Canada for a flat fee of $12.00

 Weight is a concern for some people and there is a theory that rods block  sound from reaching the resonator. Can you make rods that are smaller and or lighter than conventional rods?

Fathand , I knew that the weight of these may be a concern for some but not all ... conventional rods are normally 5/16" dia. I would have to give some thought & research to the idea of even smaller / lighter and therefore weaker rods . At some point they would have to get so small that they would no longer do their job ... and at that point you may as well leave them out altogether and block no sound from reaching your resonator ... but what I'm making here is really aimed at the open back market anyway ... thanks for the input .
