I bought a Christy long-neck in 1964 in Toronto Canada and have had it ever since with its original case. Everywhere i go people want to buy it. It sat in a closet until I retired and I'm now trying to learn to play it at the age of 74. I also have a Gibson 2008 RB-250 and a Banjola. As a beginner I can't get much difference in sound between the Christy and the Gibson although that will sound like heresy to Gibson owners. Luthiers tell me the Christy has an aluminum pot. It's almost as heavy as the Gibson. I've added a sliding capo for the 5th string. To get the best mellow sound one must play just north of the 17th fret. Otherwise one can play Pete Seeger bum-titty style or Scrugg's style just before the neck. I use the Gibson for instrumentals, the Banjola for ballads and the Christy for group jamming and singing as it seems to fit best into the folk category. Of the 3 it's my favorite.

Christy banjos have ODE aluminum pots, sometimes painted, more often covered with swirly purple plastic that was used on drum shells. If you look, you can see where the ODE logo was ground off the inside.
The necks are chunkier than the ODE and not as elegant but the tone is as powerful. These, properly set up, will hold their own with a anything.
Most are long necks but resonator 5 strings, plectrums and tenors do show up from time to time.

I owned one back around 1967, but can't recall if new or used. Was that hard rim coating Bakelite? Anyway it was rather heavy, but had I known the rim was ODE, I would probably still own the banjo; I recall liking the tone, regardless.
