It sounds as a nice tune. I will try to work with it during the weekend. 

I think it is relatively easy to make a melodic banjo tab based on the mandolin tab, but it will take some time to learn to play. I usually also try to make a more personal "banjoic"  arrangement influenced by Round Peak style and Festival style (whatever that is), and based on (what I call) "banjoic" embellishments (for example rhythmic drop thumb, and ASPOs and so on) instead of the melodic embellishments played on the fiddle or mando.

Here are two versions.

First is a melodic clawhammer version, in principle a note by not transcription from the mando tab. In the second part there is a low part which is not possible to play with the banjo tuning. There I start an octave higher, so the first half of the second part is played an octave higher than the mandolin. but the second half returns to the original pitch. There are other possibilities and starting down the neck (as the second half of the second part) and then play the 3rd and 4th measure an octave higher.

The second is a little easier (I hope) and "banjoistic" version (and with the same remark as above about the low part in the second part). See it as a starter. Usually, I use to change a lot of small things in the arrangement after playing it for a while.

Janolov has written some very nice tab and given you some choices.  I thought the tune was catchy as well, and I noticed your profile said you were "Just Starting."  So I am posting this tab to give you another choice. I have eliminated any drop thumb (which is needed to catch all of the notes in this tune) to make it easier for a new player. Again, this is to give you another choice, not to compete with Janolov's tab, which captures more of the bounce of the tune.

I will give all those versions a look and see what I can do with them.

I guess I should change that "just starting" thing.

I've been playin for about a year and a half now, I play so much that the first 5 frets are starting to show grooves where the strings are!

Drop & double thumbing and I get along quite well... but with some songs I feel like I am "just starting"!!!

We all feel like we're 'just starting' with certain tunes.  That's part of the fun.  Here's another arrangement with drop thumb.  It still lacks the syncopation that Janolov included in his versions, but it will give you another choice.

Now that I can play this tune I wanted to know a little more about it. I sent a Facebook message to Charlie Walden.

"Do you know the history of the tune "South Missouri"? I see you have it on your One Hundred Essential Missouri Fiddle Tunes list of must learn to play songs." 

His reply,

" Hi Beachbum, All I know is it's a tune I got from Cyril Stinnett. He grew up in Fordland down in the Missouri Ozarks. Never heard anyone else play it, except that they cited Cyril as the source. Make a good alternative to Liberty, similar setting but more interesting. Hope that helps."

So after a little digging I found this referance at the Fiddle Hangout,

"Cyril #7 is a tune called "Big Horn Cattle" that he learned from his father (who he said didn't know many tunes.) The only other one I remember he mentioned he got from his dad was one Cyril called "South Missouri" because he couldn't remember the name."

Here is the video of Big Horn Cattle. I can not find a version of him playing the tune South Missouri.

I have uploaded a version of this tune to the archive.  I have not tried to play it yet as I did the tab completely from theory!  I have arranged it the the key of G and standard G tuning.  Not sure if it is correct.  Could not convert the file to pdf.
