Oh yes we nick named them" dry land fish" but the real name is Morels great eating.they grow up through last of march through April then start getting scarce,according to weather here in KY. wash and soak in salt water then split open roll in corn meal and fry.
I know exactly what those are. They are not morels.
They are stinkhorns. They appear in late summer and fall. They are commonly mistaken for morels, even though they do not grow at the same time morels do.
I am a moderator for the largest morel mushroom site and message board, northerncountrymorels.com , and each year we usually see a couple reports of these found by people who mistake them for morels.
They are not edible.
They smell like feces on purpose to get flies to carry their spores.

The fruiting structure is tall and white with a slimy, dark olive colored conical head. Known as the gleba, this material contains the spores, and is transported by insects which are attracted by the odor – described as resembling carrion. Despite its foul smell, it is not poisonous and the young mushroom is consumed in parts of France and Germany.

Whenever I see wild mushrooms I immediately flashback to a Clint Eastwood movie that I saw when I was a kid titled The Beguiled. Needless to say, mushrooms played a major role in the outcome.
Those posts above that offer words of caution should be read by all who love these wondrous little treats. Even some so-called experts not infrequently mistake the poisonous varieties for those which are safe to eat. Unless you are absolutely certain as to which is which, and given the dire consequences of making the wrong choice, my advice is to buy your mushrooms from established growers.
My buddies Grandma showed us where to find meadow mushrooms & puffballs . We went to a guys farm & saw the same ones. We picked them & fried them up with steaks & baked potatoes. One girl with a car said we were crazy & wouldn't have any because somebody had to be alive to drive us to the hospital.
