Here's a little redition of Black Mtn Rag. it doesnt seem to get posted much, or is that just me?  Anyhow i learnt this with the famous Alan Munde melodic third part drifting into the D chord......i love that lick. Hmm, I was taught that learnt is past tense of learn and learned is the adjective form as in learned professor.

Both versions are very good. Some good licks in there. I really like the melodic sprinkled in along the way. It really adds a lot of flavor to an old standard. Hearin you guys makes me wanna brush up on some old melodic stuff I used to play. Good solid clean pickin by both you guys.

IDK Royce...After listenin to Locust Hill again , Id say you bees "Brushed Up"....On behalf of the old man , thanks!. Ill tell ya though, I wish I woulda stayed with his speed insteada going inbetween (at 118)..Seemed fine while I was demoing stuff to play but when she went down for real, she was between bouncin and drivin. Felt like somebody was chokin me...Should stayed at Joe's speed or ran it up to normal BG speed 125 or so but didnt wanna RE EQ my R tracks for a new speed.. Joe's speed allows for lilt and accentuated breathing. Lesson Learned! (follow older bro when in doubt..)

Nothing wrong with the speed on those songs. They really shine when you slow em down a little. 150 bpm on the straight Scruggs is fine but if you try and do that with the cool melodic licks you'll lose some of the dynamics of the tune....or even worse...get all twisted up and crash which I've done before.

A bunch of very nice versions, a great collection of styles.  Here is a version I recorded during a practice session back around 1998 or 1999, with my pals Brian Clancey on guitar, and Tom Speth on bass, backing me up.  I'm in open D tuning, aDF#AD.

I used one of Beckyboy's backing tracks. The middle section is supposed to be rolling backup, but in retrospect I probably should have been up the neck to make it sound different from the rest

A great job of picking, Ian, nice crisp, clean playing.  You stuck lots of really neat licks in there, it's got that dead-on s**t kickin' feel of the tune.  That banjo has a real nice tone, and it is surprising how well it comes through the iPhone.
