Ok, I know this discussion has raged here for some time.
I was a teacher in real life (chemistry) so I am biased, of course.
About 2 years ago , I had a banjo teacher, and for several reasons had to leave the lessons and only had time to learn on my own. I took lessons for about 6 months and then learned on my own for about 2 years.
Recently three friends an I built four banjos (described in another forum on BHO) and we four decided to get a teacher (actually the same teacher I has 2 years ago). We have been taking lessons now for about 6 weeks. We meet for two hours once every other week and we have the lesson together.
Last week, I learned more in two hours than I thought possible. It was terrific.
My advice--"Get a teacher!" If at all possible !
Our teacher teaches both tab for one of us and notation for the other two. We explore Music theory as well. It is terrific. There is much more than just playing the banjo to be learned , if you choose to do so.
Not for everyone, but it is for me.

I can say I started on my own but have recently added a banjo instructor for 1 lesson every 2 weeks and I can say I've learned a lot in the 2 lessons I have taken. I recommend a instructor if even on a once a month or 2 rotation to keep you on track.

I have a teacher I meet with once a month. He can't meet more often because he tours and records with his band. The difference in my playing ability from before and since I began lessons with him is really kind of astounding, to me, anyway. And he challenges me to work toward levels well beyond just pickin' on the porch. He's got me working on one of his songs now, a real challenge up and down the neck in minor keys.
A good teacher will always make you do more than you thought you could, if that's what you want.
