Huh. It's kind of neat (sample the album here), but it sounds more Beijing than Nashville to my ears. Which is weird, since Yo-Yo Ma was born in Paris and raised in New York.

Totally not bluegrass! I would call it acoustic-jazz with traditional American influence. The only thing missing is the Chieftains. Bluegrass is only one facet of Chris Thiele's talents. He's also in to classical and jazz and does both very, very well.
Cya!

I saw them on tv and immediately bought the album off of Itunes,, not bluegrass but if your a fan of innovative string music , it is a must,, it has a definite Folk sound to most all songs with complex arrangements,, I really like it,, Stewart Duncan is amazing on the fiddle and is a great Banjo player, there is one song with a definite Irish banjo feel to it,, Chris Thile is the best mando player since sam bush, I was kind of surprised he didnt do as much lead, but his chops are the best and keeps this unit together as a drummer would,, rounding out this group with the finest upright bass player on the planet ,
the cello really adds and fills out the sound and works well and Im sure this was done free style and full of improvising,, cant beat it,,

After listening to some of the sound files in Coop's link I have to admit it's not what I first thought/hoped for but still I think it helps bluegrass gain some interest and respect when you have a great talent the likes of Yo-Yo Ma involved.

Well, I didn't want to say anything but it didn't sound much like Bluegrass music to me either. I saw them on FOX News too. At first, I thought they were doing some kind of Irish music, then it sounded kind of oriental.
I'm glad that Yo Yo is doing it because it may cause some folks to look into Bluegrass music without feeling like they are descending into some kind of low-class music. After all, if Yo Yo is doing it, it must be cool, right? Once they are exposed to REAL Bluegrass music, they will be hooked!

Great stuff. Bluegrass to me, but everyone sees, and hears, things differently. S'cuse me now, I gotta go buy the CD.

Awwwwww shucks. That wasn't bluegrass. No way, no how.
Neither is this - - but it's Yo Yo getting closer. ![]()
