Been nice of Gibson if they would have had the courtesy to simply stamp "PW" under the lip so that all of this could have been avoided.

I know of 2 Rings with P W on Lip. Nothing else. They were there for a reason. Were not there to deceive anyone,,,,

There seem to be lots of 30's conversions around without their original tone ring. It begs the question...

Wow
reading through this thread I have detected some FLATHEAD RAGE from those who want to own and those who do. This is like roid rage but different it comes from owning an original flathead for too long or wanting one for too long the truth lies in the right hand and taste. If you can play and get good tone. Ron said it those listening wont care at all but you know it when you play it. So a good banjo is a good banjo. If the tone ring is the real deal great if not and it is a great banjo great

So very true, Joe.
If the amount of time spent arguing about tonerings was used instead behind the mike and practicing, it would do far more for a pickers tone than any tonering.
And while I'm at it, we should all remember Chet Atkins advice: "When you practice, practice as though you were in a performance on stage. The way you sound when you practice is the way you will sound on stage." Sage advice, guaranteed to do more for you than any tonering, even those with 'PW' stamped on the bottom.

You guys are like a class full of ADD students......... However, yes I apologize even more than you for taking a shot at the actual question.........Still a Newbie to the HangYourself. I wouldn't know a prewar ring if I sat on it. As previously stated, most of the prewar sound is the musician not the pedigree of the instrument. That being said, we all love to hear both at the same time, for example hearing Crowe pull tones from a fine prewar flathead.

May want to change your FONT Bill. And thank you for putting it back on track. Most of the time a banjo has a story to tell as you pointed out last week and sometimes you have to step back for a look and revisit in a different approach. Sometimes things pop out that you can't believe you missed. BTW, your familiar with 9602-xx, Skillethead's Mastertone block lettering is identical to that banjo's lettering(FONT) I'M REALLY STARTING TO HATE THAT WORD! I THINK THERE'S MORE FONT ON THESE THINGS THAN METAL OR WOOD.

I have 2 pre war banjos a 1926 Gibson arch top and a 1936 Gibson flat top and both sound great. I have not heard there tone on any other banjo yet. Not saying there are not any I just never heard one and have gotten many compliments on the tone and loudness of them.

Good grief! Talk about a subject that is clearly not "One of The Great Burning Issues of Our Time".
I`ve noodled around on a couple of originals including the one Earl Scruggs got from Don Reno (when Don had it) but my skill level was (and still is) hardly at the level necessary to truly appreciate it. This was backstage at the old "New River Ranch" near Conowingo Maryland in the mid `50s and I was way too nervous being in the presence of my banjo-hero to properly control my fingers in any case.
I`ve owned a Gibson "bitsa Granada" (bitsa this, bitsa that) for about forty years. The fellow I got it from had owned it for over ten years so the reproduction five string neck had been on it since the early 1950s; has to be some sort of record. The batch number(9264) on the resonator indicates it started out as a 1929 PB3 archtop, no decal on the rim but I`m told by someone who knows far more about it than I do that the ring is original. It doesn`t matter one whit to me as I love the way the thing sounds. I suppose after I croak my heirs might be pleased at possibly inheriting something other than my Visa bill but, aside from that......
