Mimosa Banjo - Posted - 05/16/2010: 11:44:00
Someone on another online site posted this youtube link of Dolly Parton playing the banjo. This is the first time for me to see Ms. Dolly playing and I enjoyed hearing her pick (and sing) but wondering if anyone can identify what style she is using.

No clue on her style, but really enjoyed the harmonies, especially Linda's.

That's the Pete Seeger style with slight modifications.

Can anyone tell me what type/brand of banjo she's playing. There is a close up of the peg head in the video, but I can't read the name on it.
On first look - It seemed to me that she was playing that banjo the same way she - or anyone - might play a guitar, when they wanted to do a rough semblance of fingerstyle but without actually doing fingerstyle. (hit the melody notes and pick a complementary string with it, and then strum)
Anyway her nails are way to long for a stringed instrument.

You know you are too far gone when you find yourself saying, "quit showing me closeups of that girl's face. I wanna see her banjo!"

Hi folks,
Looks like an Alvarez, metal bowtie inlay, friction tuners.
That's may story and I'm sticking to it.
Take care,
Jim

That must be double-D tuning!! (Dolly would laugh)
My grandfather had a great photo of Dolly-Emmy-Linda he took right off the TV from that very performance in the 70's. It's still in that old Smokies cabin too. Great link, thx for recalling a great memory

The "Trio" was a great act. I just can't believe how young Emmy Lou was in that video!

Here's a pic of Dolly playing a RB-250. With those Cruella DeVille fingernails, it's a wonder she can play anything, but most people aren't paying much attention to her fingers.....just us nut-job banjer pickers. And did you ever notice Dolly always play the banjo sitting down? Maybe she can't find a strap long enough to go around her...uh...well, you know....![]()

And on a NEARBY video, at first glance, I thought it was David Bowie. But it was Emmy Lou!

True, the 5th string is not there. You don't always need one...

In the video in question, she's actually playing more than I would have expected, based on how long her fingernails usually were. I'm glad others labeled it a Pete Seeger style, it's exactly what I thought. BUT, I would not in any way doubt Ms. Parton's ability to play the banjer in about any style, knowing where she comes from, how talented she is, and how many other banjer pickers she was around. Much like June Carter, I bet Dolly knew how to take a Grandpa Jones break, an Earl break, or even an Uncle Dave twirl! Whatever was needed at the moment! (Fingernail-limited, of course).
