I've been enjoying Pete Seeger very much lately, playing around with lots of his stuff on YouTube and the like. I hope to get a copy of his book later... Although my local music shop doesn't have one. Blah, blah, blah, anyway.

I found these two tunes he was playing and was having a hard time figuring them out. The Internet didn't give me any good results, so stop #2 was the forum!

I have two tunes I'd like help learning, maybe their chords or melody or somethin'.

First, "Bonnie Laddie, Highland Laddie," as played in '63, seen here:

And, secondly, and possibly much more, I'd like to figure out this fun tune, "Way out There," by Sons of The Pioneers! (Which I think we should definitely put in the tab archive at some point..)

Hope this will be some help. For Way Out There, Pete's using his Basic Strum (bumm-titty, bumm-titty). Chrck out Donald Zepp's demo video on the four styles of picking a banjo on YouTube. Pete is play the song using a C-tuming (gCGBC).

The chords are as follows:
Verse - C-G7-C-G7-C-Am-D7-G-C-F-C-G-C
Chorus (yodel) - F-C-G-F#-G-C

As for the song Highland Ladie, Pete's using his Basic Strum yet again. It appears to me that he's still in C-Tunidng and starting off with a Cm Chord.

If you like Pete, his book, How to Play the 5-string Banjo, is a must. His DVD by the same name might assist you.

Hey Chris! That was excellent help! Thanks a lot!

I was playing in G, hence my problem. It was C tuning. I had the minor/major part solved, but, haha, wrong notes! I'm definitely going to get the book!

Thank you very much for the help.

I'll make an effort to post on more substantiative things from now on.
