You are my new hero! I have been looking for this for ages.

FYI...the out-of-print Tommy & Fred Fiddle & Banjo Duets recording is available for download here, as well.

Thanks!
Judy

Great Yam Potatoes was the title of a great anthology of Mississippi fiddle tunes. It is worth seeking out.

I cannot get the file to upzip properly. I see the mp3 files, but they won't open and play. Is there still a problem with the zip part of the files?

TONS? I found a few albums. Am I not navigating the site properly?

Judy, go through the links by year on the left side of the page (2009, 2008, etc and then by month) to find older posts. I've been a fan of this blog for a while and some others too, here's some links:

http://oldweirdamerica.wordpress.com/
-Run by the same guy as above, but not as good, still worth a look.

http://grapewrath.blogspot.com/
-Interesting one here, he's been on an international kick (which includes some Celtic) lately but does some old time too. Poke through the old posts.

http://www.settingthewoodsonfire.com/
-Mostly old country, but some fiddle tunes show up sometimes.

http://therealbigrockcandymountain.blogspot.com/
-Decent, old time music shows up every now and then.

http://www.downhomeradioshow.com
-This is a cool one, it's all podcasts on folk music. I recommend listening to the episode with Bret Ratliff and the miner/activist/socialist/chain-smoker/ballad singer Nimrod Workman feature episode (a cousin of my great-grandfather!).

No downloads, but some streaming music.

These are now by invitation only and I don't know what you have to do to get invited... It's a shame because they were my favorite two, but maybe they'll come back someday so I'm sending them along:

http://fobgm.blogspot.com/
-Friends of Old Time, good blog with streaming music, unfortunately not available right now for some reason.

http://joski56.blogspot.com/
-Merlin In Rags, this was my favorite by far with tons of good downloads. Maybe it'll resurface...

http://eldiablotuntun.blogspot.com
-Not sure what happened to this one, but I guess it's down. He put up about every Uncle Dave Macon did.

Yes, there's a problem with the ZIP. I think it will open on a Mac, but it's no-go on Windows.

I used 7 Zip (install it first) on Vista with no problems - just make sure you designate the target file

slabounty - Posted - 01/23/2010:  07:34:27

I didn't have a problem unzipping, but I probably used 7-zip also.

7 zip works fine, but I am curious to find a listing giving credit to who is playing the tunes.

Judy, Also, the MP3s themselves have the artist with them. At least they showed up when I loaded it into iTunes (guess it could have come from iTunes itself).

Here are the complete liner notes for GBYP in pdf form. Over 20 pages worth! There's some great information here about Mississippi fiddling and MS old time music in general. Ya'll enjoy!

And by the way, there's a old time music gathering titled Great Big Yam Potatoes in mid-May near Natchez, MS. I believe they have a small website and a facebook page, but I don't have that info at my fingertips. This will be the third year. Lots of fun. Make plans to be there.
