If anyone out there has a TAB I think it might help me complete my mission. Is this guy on the hangout?

yeah, that was great.

I've never tabbed it out, but i usually play it in a 2-finger thumb lead style similar to how clif plays it (also in g modal tuning), but its easily adaptable to clawhammer.

I like how clawhammerinfool does that tune. I was curious if many people hook their banjo strap like he does in that video? I still haven't figured best way to hook on strap and pretty much play sitting without strap.

@JEA13: I never could get the banjo to keep from trying to center itself while using a strap. (this is while I was trying 3 finger) When I got into clawhammer and got an openback I never put a strap on it. I have to play sitting but maybe I could try it his way, it might work for my long arms. lol

One of my favorite tunes in the Sawmill (g modal) tuning. Glad to see others enjoy this great old ballad. I learned it from a tab book that has a cd with slow melodies for each song so you can play along. The book is by Wayne Erbsen - Clawhammer Banjo for the Complete Ignoramus Wayne has a website called Native Ground Music. His books also have some great photos and information about old time music. I have recommended his book many times but it doesn't get much respect on this forum, other more "FAMOUS" authors get the rave reviews. So be it. Wayne's material is a real value to folks intersested in learning to play and learning about old-time music.

@H Kimball: Thanks I will look into it. Most tab books have the same tunes so when you buy a second book you get a lot of what you already have.

it is a nice tune, actualy he's given you the tuning and you can see his fingers semi ok, take your time and you'll probably get it if that tab doesn't work out although it's funny i didn't get a book called Clawhammer Banjo for the Complete Ignoramus as it's very fitting for me.

Laura P. Schulman has a nice version on her CD. I learned it briefly to play with a friend byt didn't tab it. If her version is close to the version you refer to on YouTube, I might have time to do the tab.

I have tried it by ear in three other tunings but not yet double C. I will give that a try.

I also noticed in other videos that many players move up the fret board to use their index finger in preference to their middle or ring. This is something I almost never do and it sometimes confuses me to watch them. (not so much the case in this video but in others)

Thanks Kitt, I'm not sure why I couldn't find it. I searched the TABS and only found the ones for three finger. I selected clawhammer and any tuning.. Oh well I'm glad to have one to work with now.

Ben, I liked Virgil's playing better but liked the tempo of Clyde's version, if that makes sense.

I started playing Dwight Diller's TAB this morning and can see right away that there is a ton of ways to add drop thumbs, pull-offs and the like. This is going to be a fun tune to play around with.

Hi folks, I'm really glad you like this version of Wild Bill Jones. I've been playing it for a while now and I enjoy playing it. I havn't spent much time here at the hangout but I guess I need to update my profile and maybe put some videos up. I started using my strap like that because I found myself trying to hold my banjo in position and therefore couldn't play it very good. This way my strap holds it for me and I don't even worry about holding it. I got the idea from an old photo of Roscoe Holcomb where he has a string over his shoulder and tied on to his banjo. I tried a string for a while but it wasn't very comfortable. I have a bunch more videos on youtube some are videos of the band that I play in. We're called The Oxcart Ramblers. I think I first heard Wild Bill Jones on the Kentucky Mountain Music compilation. I'll have to double check on that. I think it might have been Banjo Bill Cornette playig it but I'm not sure. I'll check. He just did a constant finger roll throughout the tune. I've never been able to sing while doing that. I like to play the melody and sing along with that. Anyways, thanks for the kind words and I'll try not to be a stranger. Heck, maybe I'll even win a banjo!!!!!
