While at Clifftop I heard an interesting tune and asked the name of it which I have since forgotten. I have been searching high and low on the internet trying to figure out what it was with the scant information I have but to no avail. So now I ask my friends at BHO for any assistance you can offer.

Here is what I know:

The tune is in double D.

It may have the word Rattletrap or Rattlesnake in the title.

The signature sound in the tune is the Chords C to C# then again C to C#.

I saw it performed at Clifftop at the picnic shelter by a group of musicians, one of which was Rebekah Weiler, for the flatfoot dancers. I asked the bass player for the name of the tune and have now forgotten what she said it was.

Rattletrap is the signature tune of the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers, who created it from the still similar tune "Old Granny Rattle Trap". The Hilltoppers simplified the tune around that chromatic and changed the title to reflect the state of the automobile they used to travel to gigs in those days - This would be around 1982 when they were "Discovered"at the Brandywine Festival, and Joe Birchfield was the fiddler. This family band has changed a lot of personell since then as the older generation has passed, but they are still gigging today.

There is a wonderful DVD of them doing a relaxed set and talking about the family on the FRC (Field Recorder's Collective) label. I recommend it to anyone who likes straighforward stringband playing - no pyrotechnics, just good musicianship and great tunes.

Come to think of it, if you aren't in G that probably IS "Old Granny Rattletrap" and not "Rattletrap". I've never played OGR, but Rattletrap as played by the Hilltoppers is a G tune.
