All,

I was talking with my good friend Ross Nickerson (www.banjoteacher.com) last week and we came up with a great idea. As some of you know Ross is a great instructor and player that has performed and taught the 5-string banjo around the globe. He is a recording artist, author of numerous books and instructional videos as well as the mastermind behind the yearly "Banjo Cruises".

Later this year (probably Oct 17th) Ross and I plan to have a workshop here at my home in Duncannon, PA. This particular workshop will be geared toward the beginner and early intermediate level of player but more experienced players can learn a great deal as well. There is no pressure placed on anyone attending so there's no need to worry about being put-on-the-spot or to anticipate anything other than a good time.

Ross spent the time to find out what we, as a group would benefit most from, and spent a good part of the evening discussing techniques, chord exercises and practice techniques to improve playing backup.

Ross talked about how some of the things he had taught us were used by players like Earl, and demonstrated their use while playing some of those songs Earl used them in.

Many more things were presented to us, and I just want to tell you folks that if you get a chance, you should try and get in on one of these. Ross was a nice down to earth fellow that made us all comfortable. Novice to more experienced, he made sure we all were getting something good to take home and use in our playing for years to come.

I left that workshop with more direction for my practice scheduling, goal setting, and a renewed confidence that I can get to where I want to be with my banjo playing.

I really enjoyed the things Ross showed us that to me, amount to playing around or noodling, but with a few goals, the noodling became a fun, rewarding learning experience that will allow me to learn techniques to apply to all songs I am playing or plan to play.

Our question to all of you is would you be interested in attending? We are only accepting 15 registrations so once the date is set (we will announce when this is definite) don't wait too long to register. The workshop will most likely be on Saturday, October 17, 2009 from 2pm-6pm. Four hours of instruction that you may record either in audio or video format so long as it is for your personal use only. The cost will be $60.00 for the four hours which will include some light snacks.

I attended one of Ross' workshops about a year ago. It was time well spent and an outstanding value...he really is a great teacher.

The workshops are for beginners and intermediate players.
Students do no need to bring their banjos if they prefer not to.

It's also ok to record or videotape the workshop as long as it used for personal use only.
