My apologies if someone else has already mentioned this on BHO (I searched and didn't find anything)...
I am really looking forward to this coming to PBS next week!:
http://www.appalachiafilm.org/
Here in Portland its first part shows on April 9th (or is it the same all around the country - I'm not sure).

Now if I can only remember to tune in. It's a week away and my memory is failing fast.

Well, I hope it not made by some university professors from Boston but rather is useful and teaches how to boil and skin and stretch a groundhog hide over a banjo rim. Or at the very least the fundamentals of building a proper still.

Hmmm...it says it came out in 2008 so I don't know if it's so new after all...at any rate I haven't seen it and PBS hasn't shown it before so I'm in! ;-)
Chip - might I suggest that which has SAVED MY LIFE:
http://www.google.com/intl/en/googl...r/about.html
You can set it to remind you via email, pop-ups or cell phone texts (maybe even voice mails but I can't remember), as far ahead of time and as often as you want. You can also share your calendar with others which is useful for spouses and co-workers and you can set things that happen regularly quickly by just clicking on the option of "every week same time" or something like that. It also does MUCH more.
For easy youtube instructions (not that you couldn't easily figure it out yourself):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iTsxQFvQZQ
I'm not sure but I suspect you have to have a gmail account to use google calendar (the "g" in gmail stands for "google"), however the other guys, e.g. hotmail or aol etc. have their own versions, too. That said, google calendar is known to be the best. It has changed my life I tell you!!
If you don't have a gmail account, you have to be invited by one who does. I can invite you if you want so if so, just let me know (and you can then pass the favor on to the next person - we're allowed to invite up to a certain number but I can't remember what).

Whooooey....this might be scary if thars anything bout my ol stompin ground in Harlan. I have some kind of DVD about Appalachia with Johnny Cash and Rosanne narrating. Don't think it's the same series. Thanks for the post!

Thanks for posting that Theresse, I really appreciate any information about the Appalachians. I already have a copy of the PBS documentary, "The Appalachians" and loved every minute. It's great to see PBS is committed to continuing to air documentaries about such an interesting part of North America. I look forward to the DVDs.

Sarah Gunning was one cool lady!!!! Very tragic life. Very good balladeer.
I'll probably miss the PBS thing, becasue I only watch TV whenever I just don't have much else going on, and usually just thumb through the 50,000 or so channels my husband pays for until something hits me... normally it's a b & w Andy GRiffith... if I run across that I normally stop the thumbing, fill up the coffee cup and sit back for a few minutes.
But I'd like to see this if I could think to look out for it.

A three-minute trailer and not a single banjo to be found. Sheesh.
I dont play favorites. I play the banjo.

I tuned in and it wasn't playing. Georgia public tv has a different schedule I guess. Very dissapointed.

It was on Thursday in upstate NY. I DVRed it and plan on watching tonight. They had a mountain music documentary about 5 or 6 years ago and it was incredible. Definatley one of the influences that brought my interest over from country music to old time. I'm from VA originally and I still pine for the blue ridge mountains, 20 years later. Very excited to watch it.
vrteach - Posted - 04/11/2009: 13:58:10
Well, I watched part of it. The background music was quite good--in fact perhaps the best version of Soldiers Joy that I've heard.
But.
Spare me the mystical-connection-with-the-land stuff. I've lived in a hollow. It did not feel like getting a hug from God.
But then, I like big skys and far-off horizons (I grew up on the north shore of Lake Superior)..
The music was good, but I ended up deciding I rather make my own.

I didn't get a chance to finish it, due to the Yankees game trumping EVERYTHING. The first one was pretty good, but I'm not that interested in the ecology. As far as the music goes, I'm using every free minute during my spring break to learn some songs from RSB now that I finally downloaded it, so I made my own. I'm still looking forward to the next installments.

That made me feel really bad for you, Theresse. But I'll have to admit that it also made me laugh, since this was your post and all. Well, hang in there it will come around again, I'm sure. Sorry, really, that you missed the show.

I tuned in according to my local PBS scheduleing and was very disappointed that it wasn't on "regular" PBS, but only on "PBS World", whatever that is, on comcast only :(
Theresse - Posted - 04/16/2009: 22:07:53
I saw the second installment tonight. I really liked it, although I was so tired for some reason (made a good dinner, made sure child's homework was done early, got the kids to bed early enough so I wouldn't miss a minute of it, had a little wine and was full of anticipation) that 2/3 of the way through it I kept FALLING ASLEEP!
But honestly, I was lulled by the beauty of the images and sounds of the forest and the descriptions of the soil and leaves and water and vegetation and then there was Sissy's pleasant voice...pretty funny how relaxed I got (okay the 2 glasses of wine probably helped). Lush forests are so beautiful and calming to me that even just watching it on TV carried me away to happy la la land. ![]()
What a magical place. Can't wait to hopefully stay awake for part 3!
Theresse - Posted - 04/16/2009: 22:09:13
Off topic here, but are there any great banjo camps held in the Appalachian forests?
frodo1mjg - Posted - 04/18/2009: 23:24:55
we rented it on Net Flix loved it but I'm glad I didn't spend 62 bucks on it. I've seen 'part one' If i like the rest I'll probably go the fifteen bucks for the sound trak
