Here's a nice D tune that's from Bill Conley's fiddling on the third volume of the Rounder series "Traditional Fiddle Music of the Ozarks." I know next to nothing about this tune, only that it "derives from a choral song from the late minstrel era" (so sayeth the liner notes). I've put an *.mp3 at:

The first two times through are on a fretless tuned aDADE then two times through on a fretted tuned aADAD. The fretted version has more "blues notes" (a.k.a., flubs) than I would like. I don't usually play the tune in this tuning, but sometimes do so as to pair with "Missouri Mud." There's also a *.jpg of the tab in my BHO photos, and *.tef and *.pdf of the tab at the website in my signature. Finally, as this tune is (sort of) a Missouri tune, I'm fully expecting one of the Illinois pickers to do an Illinois "Tune of the Week" next week.

I also have a live recording of Abigail Washburn playing a tune by that name (with vocals). It's very different, so it's probably not the same tune.

I found the tune in my personal song collection done by the Tenneva Ramblers, named because their town was divided by Tennessee (Tenne) and Virginia (Va). I read about this group who performed with Jimmy Rogers here.

I think it is the same tune, and there are words. I copied them from what I could hear, and believe all are correct except for line three in the first verse. I just could not hear what they were singing. Assuming this is the same tune brought to us by Lyle, here are the lyrics. They "fit" if you like to sing and play (I am lucky to merely play - forget the singing).

TABS.... so's we who are slower, than youse who aren't,

Thanks, Lyle- but that .tef file just froze my HD after I played it once.
Couldn't do a thing on my whole desktop, and it wouldn't print or close.
Had to go to Task Mgr to get out of it.
I'm running XP w/DSL .& 512 mem. .... it shouldn't've done that unless it was unstable. Anybody else have any prollems, or is it just me?

I just tried it with "tefview" at work and had no problems. At home I use the full version of tabledit and DSL to get to the net. Anyone else having trouble (with this tab) out there?

The TEF file opened fine in TefView for me. The PDF worked fine as well.


It sounded like Bob had a problem when he played the Midi file. That worked fine for me too.

The fretless on the first part of the *.mp3 was the H.C. Dobson with light gauge metal strings while the fretted on the second part was the Reiter tubaphone also with metal strings and a brown wool sock stuffed between the dowel and the head. These are my two favs from the fretless and fretted divisions.

I was telling Dan Levenson about the tune of the week, and went over the short list with him.

He said that this tune is the same as Bob Carlin's Tempy - and it is - Bob even sings and plays - real words, real song, real good, too.

When I spelled TEMPIE and not TEMPY, I found several files in my collection with the words "Tempie Roll Down Your Bangs" just like Bob Carlin was singing. I've versions by Tommy Jarrell, Bob Carlin, The Roan Mountain Hilltopers, Rafe Steffani, and Brad Leftwich.

I'm not sure this is identical to Mole in the Ground, though, but it sure is the same as Tempie.

Wow, sad commentary on my auditory skills, as I know "Tempy" (or "Tempie" or "Mole in the...") and never noticed the connection to the Tune o' the Week. Now I'm curious about the B part, though, as it is in "Goodbye, My Honey, I'm Gone" and in some of the "Tempies" (Carlin/Molsky and Roan Mountain Hilltoppers from whence they got their version) though not typically in the sung versions.

Great tune Lyle--thanks for the tune & history.

I also hear a connection with Marcus Martin's & Bascom Lamar Lunsford's "Last Gold Dollar is Gone." Marcus Martin played it on both fiddle & banjo. Bascom Lunsford played it in his "uppicking" style sang many of the same words. Marcus Martin's starkly simple banjo version -- in the western NC 2-finger style in F#DF#AD tuning -- can be heard on the Field Recorders Collective CD.

Maybe I'm the only one this happens to......so I listen to a song I haven't heard before.......like Goodbye My Honey when this thread was first posted for instance...and I think yeah that's a good tune allright....but then after repeated listenings I start to love it.
Today I sat in on a fiddle workshop taught by fiddler Jenni Wallace and she showed the students Goodbye Honey.....well sir by the end of the hour I was lovin the tune...and remembered this tune of the week....and listened to Lyle playing it again.....what a great tune!.....and that's a definitive version ya gots there Lyle...nice playing!

That kind of stuff happens to me all the time. I am humming a tune, or learning one on my own, and the tune might not be all that popular. Then I'll go to a jam or a cncert and someone else is playing the same thing.

I don't think this is related to this song but perhaps someone more knowledgable could help me figure it out. Maybe it is. The song is " I Love my Honey I do" played by Fiddlin Sam Kelly. I think about the only thing similar is the title, but boy I like to find a tab for it.

I featured it in one of my videos ( about 20 mbs) , that's the only version I have online anywhere.

No, doesn't seem to be related. Santford Kelly starts off the recording by saying that this is "an old piece I made up for myself, 'I Love My Honey, I Do.'" Presumably the "old piece" reference is to an 1895 publication by William C. Carleton titled: "I love my Honey, yes, I do! Comic Song & Chorus." (thanks to Amazon, or I would never have found out about this).
