How many Ome players out there? I've been using a Monarch as my main banjo since 1986....According to the Ogsbury's mine is one of about 20 that was made back then with a one piece neck.....They said it was a kind of pre war version of their Monarch....I wonder if anyone else in here has one of these......

My main banjo is an Ome Monarch Megatone, now 5 or 6 years old & brought into UK by its previous owner (another BJHangout member).
There was an Ome thread running in here about a month ago - you might want to search for it.

I bought a 1985 Monarch maple a year ago. I was concerned that it might not be all original but Tonya said that it is. Wouldn't part with it.

I bought mine down at Merelfest in 98, one of the best sounding banjos I own, I think it has a zinc flange or something , Tanya said they don't have anymore or something to that effect, I can't remember that far back, I love it.

Mine is Ome XX openback (#800) with a no-hole silverspun tone ring and mahogany neck/pot. I love the frets used on this one; they are fat and tall, making it easy to play with a fast and light touch on the left hand, and seem likely to last forever. I'm the 4th BHO'er to be caretaker of this old Ome.

We've got two. A minstrel Jubilee that I bought from Donald Zepp 8 years ago and a Primrose that I bought from Miss Tanya at Clifftop a couple of years ago. Both are class banjos with different sounds. As Donald Zepp said one time, They are the Cadillacs of banjos. He is right in the best old meaning of that phrase.

I have 3 OMEs:
1. The PROTOTYPE for the Renaissance/ Gryphon Grand Artist -- 1992.
Spun-ring openback, gryphon's-head heel carving, carved-back snap-on resonator.
I designed the Renaissance model and its inlay pattern for OME, back in the early 1990s. I had the FIRST Grand Artist Prototype made of it -- as my design fee. (I'm holding it in my avatar photo.)
My Grand Artist has ruined me for every other banjo I own (which is quite a few...). It has been my MAIN playing banjo, since 1992 -- when Chuck Ogsbury handed it to me, at the Tennessee Banjo Institute. I tend to keep it in Double-C tuning. (And it needs a serious overhaul, sometime soon...)
2. Columbine I -- spun-ring openback -- 1983.
Spun-ring. Purchased used, in 1997, from a local music shop. It's my "second" MAIN playing banjo. I tend to keep it in G-tuning.

i have a OME millenium " blue banjo " i like it ,it is not my main banjo but it is very nice . my only radius neck banjo . Tanya and her boys make real good banjos

I have one Ome and several Odes.. The Ome is a 79 XX resonator and has the sweetist tone. It is one of my favorite banjos and dont think it wont play bluegrass and cut through in a jam....I traded for it to re-sell, but I am going to keep it. Doug

The people at Ome are absolutely wonderful. I recommend a visit if you ever get to Boulder Colorado. Luckily I live close and go by every Thursday to see Tanya. She is helping me with my clawhammer technique.

Oooooh... A Bright Angel with the scroll headstock? I have been pricing one with an extra long neck and was thinking the scroll would be cool -- now I know: it is way cool! I am thinking of the 12" pot with the snap-on resonator. Since I plan to play mostly open-backed, I will likely pass on the top-tension like yours. I am still trying to decide whether or not to have a tone ring -- there was no issue until I played a 12" Jubilee Deluxe at the Gryphon last Saturday -- now I am not so sure...
Back to topic, I have an old MUSE extra-long neck mahogany/aluminum. The tone holds up surprisingly well to my Pete Seeger from the same era. The ODE is a little louder while the PS-5 is a touch brighter.

I am curious as to what they will put in the first three frets of an extra long neck Bright Angel. I don't really care much as long as it is not naked and they start the regular inlays at the 4th fret..

The biggest decision they made on my behalf was the placement of the inlays on the peghead.
I'm sure if you told them you wanted the inlays on the first frets they would do that.

I played the Deluxe Juniper Megatone and Custom gold Monarch Bluegrass.The DJM was nice but that Monarch blew me away.I doubt I will ever be good enough to justify the price but it's easily the best sounding banjo I've ever played so far.

How do you pronounce 'OME'?
I never really thought about it before... just figured it was pronounced 'Ohm'
I was speaking to another banjo player last weekend who told me he had ordered an 'Oh-May' banjo and I didn't know what he was talking about. When he spelled the name, then I understood.
So, I figured I would put it to people who knew ;-)

i recently received my new ome juggernaut from janet davis .what a great sounding banjo it is .totally different to my other banjos ,it is in a class of its own ,not only its sound but the workmanship and quality is what perfection is all about .

I've got a very early Ode Style D. Serial #277. It's a great banjo.
The longer scale length is a little strange because I usually play a Robin Smith
Heartland, but no question it's a great banjo. Pretty rare, too.

Yeah, "Ohmmmmm". I heard that it's because Chuck is into yoga and stuff like that. Plus he wanted the new name as close to "Ode" as possible.

The correct pronunciation (per Chuck and Tanya) is "Ohm" as in "home" without the "h." You could say Ho-me, but that would have an entirely different meaning, especially in certain parts of the country.

In the early '90s, Chuck used a tag-line in his advertsing:
"Ome is where the Art is"
(A take-off on: "Home is where the Heart is")
Since I've designed banjos for OME, and will be helping Tanya
in the OME booth, at Clifftop, this month -- I can say definitively,
the name is pronounced like "Home", without the "H".
However, I have met a LOT of people at festivals, who thought it
was pronounced "Oh-me" -- like the folksong, "Little Omie Wise".
(So... if you thought that, you're NOT alone --- it has been confusing
to people...)
