Gibson: Earl Scruggs Standard

Submitted by dtuner5 on 10/24/2006

Where Purchased: Brook Mays

Year Purchased: 1997
Price Paid: 3200 ($US)

Sound

This banjo has always had a bright and deep tone, if that makes sense. It wasn't as clear past the 15th fret as I would like, but a Charlie Cushman setup has made a world of difference. I didn't know it could sound this good.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

I added 2 spikes and d tuners since I bought it. I'm on my third bridge. The last bridge change was made by Charlie. The string height was what I wanted from the start. It's always been easy to play. Neck is comfortable.

Setup Rating: 7

Appearance

Maple neck and resonator. Beautiful banjo.

Reliability

No reliability issues. I trust it.

Never had any warranty issues. Never took it back to Gibson for anything. Don't know about the warranty length.

Components

Standard bridge was not great. I hear they are using better bridges from the factory now. Tuners are excellent. No other issues

Overall Comments

In 2006 I would recommend other banjos for the money. I have it insured for it's actual value and if stolen I would buy another brand before a new ESS. I do love it. I bought it because of Earl Scruggs and the Gibson name. There are so many more quality banjos being made now. I got a good one but I wouldn't buy a new Gibson now.

Overall Rating: 9
