Crafters of TN: Classic Mahogany

Submitted by snoopy on 7/3/2008

Where Purchased: Guitar Center Nashville

Year Purchased: 2008
Price Paid: 2000 ($US) (bought USED)

Sound

The banjo sounds like a dream (I play bluegrass). I played the Earl Scruggs Gibson at the Store in the mall and this is the only banjo I've ever heard that is comparible to that.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

The Banjo was set up well by Guitar Center. I am no expert on setting up a banjo, but I do know that it sounds great.

Setup Rating: 9

Appearance

The banjo looks great and it is not overly frilly. The only issue is that it needs to be polished a bit.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

This banjo, like all good banjos is heavy and appears to be made to last.

Reliability Rating: 9

Customer Service

I called the guys at Crafters just to get info on the banjo and they were really great. How often can you call the manufacturer and just talk to them about your banjo for 20 minutes.

Customer Service: 10

Components

Components seem top notch

Components Rating: 10

Overall Comments

This is the nicest banjo I've ever played or heard. I'm lucky to have found one that was even affordable. I would throw myself off a bridge if it got stolen.

Johnson: Johnson JB-100

Submitted by snoopy on 2/20/2008

Where Purchased: The Players Bench

Year Purchased: 2007
Price Paid: 250 ($US)

Sound

The Banjo has a good sound, but as I've never had a different banjo to compare it with. I can only say so according to recordings that I've heard. One thing I will say is that to me the banjo is a bit too loud when practicing with fingerpicks, but that's probably how it's supposed to cut through other instruments.

Sound Rating: 6

Setup

The banjo seems to be set up OK, although I have gone though and tightened and tweaked it a bit.

Setup Rating: 8

Appearance

The banjo isn't pretty, but what I mean is that there is very little flourish or detail on these low priced banjos. That's fine by me though. For being plain, it still looks just fine and really well put together.

Appearance Rating: 5

Reliability

I certainly can't fault the makers of this banjo for reliability. It seems really well put together and I havent had any problems as far as the finish coming off. It is dependable.

Reliability Rating: 9

Customer Service

No contact with customer service. Haven't needed to.

Customer Service: 10

Components

One thing I would like in these banjos is some sort of 5th string capo spikes installed because it seems really important while learning to be able to play in other keys. So far after a year nothing has worn down or not worked.

Overall Comments

Some of the reviews I've seen for this banjo have talked about the banjo constantly going out of tune. That is surprising to me because I have a tuner and check before each practice and I barely ever have to change it, so my comment is that mine stays in tune great. I definitely think it's a great banjo for the money, since I'm not able to buy a "decent" banjo at least I can still learn how to play.
