This performance is very interesting and thoughtful. I don't think I have ever heard anything like it before in the dance canons. I think I hear Celtic influence. It has a minimalist ballad quality.

Thanks for the kind words Dock. This tune struck me the first time I heard it and it is now my current obsession. I strongly encourage you to download Rayna Gellert's version from Amazon. It's only 99 cents for crying out loud! And get your fiddling comrades to learn it.

Joe - I can't match Dock's words in terms of their musical intellectuality because I'm relatively new to the banjo world - classic banjo since Sept 2009, bluegrass since June this year - but Winder Slide is probably my 'current obsession'. I too have Rayne Gellert's version, it's played at my local monthly jam and I'm trying to put together a bluegrass version of it (if that's allowed!). I love your recording. Thanks for sharing it. Liz

Now this is banjo! What a is a beautiful tune. It sound like it was written ages ago. And what a haunting atmospheric recording. You folks have taste! Nick

Nick...thanks for the compliment...it do sound old, doesn't it?...but was written "only" 30 years ago by Joe LaRose. As to the atmospheric recording...glad you like it, but it is the result of recording in a big, nearly empty room and near complete lack of technical ability on my part. As to taste...I like what the ancient romans said (loosely translated)..."in matters of taste, let there be no dispute"
If you like this, then seek out "The Second of May", written by Jay Lapp...band is the Steel Wheels. I'll post it one old day:)
Hope this finds you well.
