Pickin' in Caithness

Or trying to, at least! The weather here, especially now makes picking outdoors simply impossible. The constant high speed winds makes it hard to even stand on your feet or walk straight and the temperatures, despite the sunshine are below freezing. Your fingers get numb and your hand gets red on the first break!

Very beautiful, Mike! Ever since dIRE sTRAITS produced Brothers in Arms in 1985, I have longed to see the Highlands. So happy you have realized that dream. So it is deceiving, how the sun is shining, but with the wind it is too cold to play outdoors. Indeed a long way from Mississippi! |

Thank you, Dave. You'll get to see if for yourself how beautiful it is. Oh yeah, the sun shines, but the cold is unforgiving. We are in the same northern latitude as southern Norway and Juneau, Alaska and further north than Denmark and Moscow. So it is very cold. Right now in the winter, the day just lasts a few hours as well. In the summer time, it gets dark at around midnight and the sun comes up again at 3am. It's crazy! Oh yeah, it is impossible to play outside here during the winter, you can only get away with the local bagpipes and only for so long. |

Had to go grab a quilt. Your description gave me chills. It is beautiful but this Southern gal couldn't handle the cold. |

Yeah, that part of here is annoying - there's no banjo picking outdoors, because it's always too cold and your fingers, if you play Scruggs, get slower and come to a halt within a couple of minutes. There are some days during the summer on which is possible to play outside, but those are rare - very rare. In fact, the whole time I lived in Caithness, I was only able to do that in one occasion. The wind is also constant and extremely strong - it shakes the curtains inside with double-glazed windows shut, sometimes it feels like there's a demon outside, mad as hell and trying to get in! But yeah, there's the elusive sun sometimes, but no warmth comes with it. |
