The oldest-known skin-headed tanbur (a more correct term than lute) is the "Lute of the singer, Har-Mose" (c.1490 BCE), found in an an Egyptian tomb. It had 3-strings, and... was played with a "plectrum" (flatpick) -- which is still attached to it, by a cord.
