The quality of the photograph, the colour, and the clothing all suggest a somewhat later date than 1917 to me. Where does that date come from?
It's a lovely picture nonetheless.

Hey Marc yes it is a cool photo. It is a hand colored photo but I think on this digital version the color looks much more saturated than it really is. I thought there was a pencil inscription on the back but if there was it has worn off. It does have a catalog #. I went back and found the receipt from when I bought it and the dealer said it was circa 1910. I have no reason to not believe him. I have other cards of similar color and quality from that era.

At first glance, it didn't look hand coloured to me. But armed with the knowledge that it is, I took another look, and now see some tell-tale signs (such as the red stripes not quite reaching the left side of the robe in places - as well as the red stripes on the shadow!).
