Here's an alternative to lathe forming a rim. The secret is to form a base with a precisely sanded outer diameter. The base rides against two guide boards located to the right and to the rear of the base. Slightly oversized segments are glued directly to the base and acurately sanded with a 80 grit drum sander. Cut or plane away the base to reach the inner portion that could not be initially shaped with the sanding drum. Clean up the outside and inside surface with a random orbit palm sander.

Great setup. Do you rough-cut every layer of the rim to an oversize circle before you do the glue up?

Hi Zee. Yes, rough cutting the rim so it is 1/8" oversize allows sanding to finished profile much more easily. This IS a messy operation!
