Is the star cut out of the brass? Or is the star "ebonized"?

I first cut the star out of the brass, attached the plate, and then inlayed an ebony star in the cavity like you would normally do with shell inlay. I think it looks really cool and it was pretty easy - the brass is so soft I just cut it with my regular jewlers saw.
